hey guys i need some questions answered. First i had vista and decided to upgrade to windows 7 since i heard it was faster in boot up. after upgrading it took quite a long time to load up, even my vista loaded faster so i re installed vista from fustration. Why is it so slow what am i doing wrong? all i did was upgrade from vista since it was recommended to have SP 2. If 7 is like vista it should work with no problem and without tweaking. i have a asus laptop with core 2duo 2.10 Ghz 4 RAM 500GB HDD and ATI radeon HD 4570 512MB. Second question, i hear alot about people saying that vista 32 bit can only run 3 GB RAM, but mine says 4GB by itself with no (using 3GB). Is that normal? am i using 4GB or 3GB of RAM? because i dont know if its worth upgrading to 7 if it starts up slow and uses 3GB.

i have read other posts but its all everywhere and confusing. sorry if im just repeating a thread.

Hello and welcome to the forums.

1. I highly advise doing a clean install of Windows 7 if possible, back-up you important files, and do a clean install.

2. It varies from user to user, some have the ( 3.xx useable ) and some don't. I think it has something to do with on-board graphics.

3. This is where 32bit and 64bit separate, 32bit OS is limited to < 3.5/4.0 GB while 64bit is not limited at all, except for motherboard and chipset restrictions.
If your using 64bit W7, your full 4GB will be recognized, without the 3.xx useable) message, if your using 32bit W7, your 4GB will be recognized, but Windows will report the "Useable" somewhere between 3.2 and 3.8GB.

Hope this helps.

thank you for your reply and yes it did help but i got 2 more questions, sorry if i sound no0bie. so if windows 7 does use around 3GB what would happen to my other 1GB? is it still used for other programs? and when i bought my laptop it came with vista with a free upgrade to windows 7 which they sent out to me later on. So the latop came with the recovery CD with vista and the bloatware and drivers which means i need vista in order to upgrade to 7. is this considered a clean install also keeping in mind its not an original copy of vista with bloatware and all that stuff?

Haha, no you don't sound noobie, it's better you ask questions, then go ahead and stuff it up because you didn't know what to do.

It's not windows 7 that uses the 3GB, the 3GB is allocated to the OS and Programs, the other 1GB or so goes to the Graphics.

If you don't want the Cr*pware that came with Vista, use this link to perform a clean install with your Upgrade Disc.

32bit is limited to 3.5gb of addressable RAM... its the nature of the beast..If you can run 64bit then you will be able to use all of your RAM... You should (IMO) perform a clean install... choose advanced options during the install process.... Let us know if you need any help...

All i have to say, my Vista 32 experience wasn't pleasant at all. If anything, i say my PC's gaming performance has improved since the move to W7 RTM.

thank u guys i followed the instructions and its all working good for me now finally. oh by the way is it safer to have and use a standard user instead of administrator for personal use on my laptop? because i noticed that booting up is quicker without another user.

If your the only user, Your first account will be Administrator, and it's probably better that way. Limited user is quite restrictive, so probably not the best idea if your the only user.

Now make a Win7 Backup image stored to a primary partition and/or external drive and you will never have to reinstall Win7 again, just reimage the HD or a replacement in 15 minutes by booting from the Win7 DVD repair console.

thanks you guys =]
