Quicktime?

Do you need to install QuickTime in W7 RTM to get movie trailers from Apple.com to play in Firefox etc.?

That depends on the format. For mob and other QT forms you need certain elements while necessarily QT and ITunes even.

The problem at the moment is that no one will have the actual RTM on until it becomes available on August 6th to find out if any separate components are still required. From then on you would need to ask someone with a paid subscription at MSDN who has the actual retail edition installed.

you need either quicktime or quicktime alternative. apple trailers come as MOV files.

i definitely recommend quicktime alternative. lets you play MOVs in WMP or whatever your fave player is. and apple trailers are the best - i just watched the trailer for Alice in Wonderland in 1080p. i can't wait to see it!

I have some Lyda.com tutorial videos that are quick time movies and they play in windows media player without installing anything,they did not work in Vista and I had to install QT player

WMP will play .mov files in Windows 7. That's a change from Vista or XP.

However, I don't think that you can play the files in a web browser without the QT plugin. I have no idea whether you can get non-Apple equivalents.

I have Quicktime installed. I don't find it all that intrusive, once I've set up the file types that it becomes the default player for. I also uninstall the auto-update tool.

One thing I found annoying here when having QT on was constantly seeing the update notification for the latest release of that as well as ITunes and Bon whatever to be installed. QT itself isn't intrusive while the update notications for the other guy's OS can get on your nerves a bit at times.

QT Alt is also advantagous for users who don't like the QT player or WMP. i run MPC, and with QT Alt it plays the HD apple trailers just fine. also in-browser works, and it works fine with itunes...

I ran MPC and ITunes on Vista here and WMP10 on XP since not too many liked WMP11 to start with. At least 12 has seen quite a bit of improvements!

A good rule of thumb when installing any apple product:

Head straight to msconfig to disable any apple apps from the start up. Then head to uninstall apps and remove all but the core components. Finally take a swing by services to disable any other unwanted nuisances.

actually it's pretty easy to just unpack the itunes installer with Universal Extractor. inside you'll find more installers. just run the one for itunes, and don't bother installing the other crap.

there is also a guy who puts together switchless installers for itunes and some other apps - they run silently and don't install those unnecessary components. perfect for slipstreaming. i won't post links here, but they're easy enough to find...

I forgot about that way ...and I've used that method a couple of times too

I rarely update my GF's iPod and when she asked me to add some stuff the other day I realised I haven't had iTunes installed for a couple of months so I just did the old download, install and mop up routine.

I generally uncheck the bon useless item from the start and automatically disable any items in the startup list if and when any thing like ITunes is even installed. For 7 you can be sure I left that stuff out entirely while previously running it on XP and Vista.
