RAM Issues

So I went out and got Windows 7 Professional and I picked up a 2x2Gb OCZ DDR2 kit. Eager as a kid, I install the ram and go and install Win7. I notice that only 2943Mb of RAM are "installed." When I check the BIOS, is says that 4 Gb of RAM are installed but 1 Gb is "appropriated." My buddy is running the same chip and mobo as me and his setup acknowledges all 4Gb. The differences in our systems are his video card (GTX260 core 215, I run 9600 GT) and the brand of his RAM (Corsair). Otherwise, Intel Pentium D (830 i think? - 3.00Ghz), and Asus P5LD2 Deluxe mobo. Any input would be appreciated.

I believe the problem is that your mobo can only support 4GB ram max and this may well include your video memory (thats the memory on the card and physical ram reserved for gfx use) which may well total around 1GB limiting your usable ram to around 3GB.

If you look at system in control panel it should say installed ram 4GB usable xxGB

Right click on task bar, go to task manager, go to performace. What are the memory stats that are shown, in the chart bottom, left.

It is very hard to buy ram when its mix and match.

I didn't read wall-of-text. But I gather you're running mixed RAM and that is always a precarious situation. The newer, high-end systems are delicate enough without adding mixed RAM timings to the system. Pull the varied RAM, try running matched pairs and you will see stability.

What chipset do you have? It must be old if it can't support 3GB. How much dedicated video RAM on your GPU? Results of dxdiag? Can you check HWInfo32 in the drivers guide in my sig - post a screenshot of the summary screen.

Thanks!

The thing is that my friend (lets call him J) is running almost the same setup and his machine is acknowledging all 4 gb in bios and win 7. I am not. We have the same mobo/chipsets.

Frost, I'm attaching a screenshot, if you need any other info to help me out, let me know.

I had an intel 945 GMA chipset before on an aspire 5610z and it can support maximum 2 gigs of ram. Your chipset also appears to be the 945 chipset.

Go to your manufacturer's site and also check intel's site about the chipset. Check for maximum ram.

Ignore what I said: I checked intel for the intel 945 P express chipset. The max ram is 4 gig.

Thats the confusing part, the screen shot shows that it sees all 4 gb, but system only shows 3, and bios shows 4, but only 3 available.

my bios does not have memory remap option so I can not enable it :(

I would accept it as it is but if its a matter of a 4 gb cap then I would expect to see 3.5gb of ram as my video card only has 512mb of ram, and then there is the other setup up which has all 4 gb as available on the same mobo.
