Solved Random BSOD after hibernate/sleep on Win 7

Experiencing BSOD randomly but frequently enough to be annoying after waking the laptop up from hibernating or sleeping. All that happens is the screen goes black and a forcefull reboot is required, i am only informed about the BSOD after restarting. I have noticed several people have this problem but solutions are varied. any help would be appreciated.

I'm running Win 7x86 Ultimate full retail installed 2 years ago on a 4 year old Acer Aspire 5735 which had Vista originally.

btw my installation came in the box with a code and everything, plus i havent received the counterfiet software warning before so i'm hoping my OS is indeed legit. i did have a problems with downloading and installing the WinDBG tool as well, hence my posting the dump files here instead.

As far as I can tell I do not have Cisco's VPN client installed, however I am using Nortel's VPN client to access & use the work network so I'm assuming it also uses the culprit ndis.sys file. I can't uninstall it as I need to use that network but I have done research on BSOD relating to ndis.sys and all the several solutions suggested have not worked (5 crashes in the last fortnight) including updating the program (I have the newest version) and running DNEupdate. It must be a fault with my particular OS setup then.

I have tried to but not been successful. Updated everything that can be updated and removed software known to cause problems except the vpn program i mentioned before. I suspect it may be more related to drivers than software as the laptop originally came with Vista. I do also get the system freezing during some restarts, the desktop appears but explorer doesn't and a forced shut down is required as nothing responds.

If it is driver related, we should be able to track it down...
  • Run Driver Verifier to find any issues. To run Driver Verifier, do the following:
    a. Backup your system and user files
    b. Create a system restore point
    c. If you do not have a Windows 7 DVD, Create a system repair disc
    d. Run Driver Verifier and in step 3, only select Standard settings. Do not select the other two settings in the red boxes.

    If Windows cannot start in normal mode with driver verifier running, start in safe mode. If it cannot start in safe mode or normal mode, restore the system restore point using http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html OPTION TWO.

    If you are unable to start Windows with all drivers being verified or if the blue screen crashes fail to create .dmp files, run them in groups of 5 or 10 until you find a group that causes blue screen crashes and stores the blue screen .dmp files.​
    The idea with Verifier is to cause the system to crash, so do the things you normally do that cause crashes (or in your case, freezes). After you have a few crashes, upload the crash reports for us to take a look and try to find patterns.

Also, you never posted: what were the results of sfc /scannow? What about SeaTools?

The SeaTools generic tests, both Long and Short came up green for both hard drives. I used the Yamicsoft Windows 7 Manager to check the integrity of system files. I've done it several times and no problems have been reported. The Atheros driver won't update though and keeps reporting that it is the latest version of the driver. I will attempt to run Driver Verifier but first I'm meeting with the a technician who's with the administration of the network I use to see if I can use an alternate VPN client. Have it booked for mid-April so it's awhile away but I believe that the NDIS.SYS file should be sorted before anything else.

To install the Atheros update, follow these general steps after downloading the updated driver:
  1. Click Start Menu
  2. Right Click My Computer/Computer
  3. Click Manage
  4. Click Device Manager from the list on the left
  5. Find the device you are trying to uninstall by expanding the appropriate set of devices
  6. Right click the device
  7. Click Uninstall (do not click OK in the dialog box that pops up after hitting Uninstall)
  8. Put a tick in Delete driver software for this device (if this option is available, otherwise just hit OK) and hit OK
  9. DO NOT restart your computer
  10. Install the latest driver for the device.

Alternatively:
  1. Login as an adminstrative user.
  2. Click Start Menu
  3. Click Control Panel
  4. Click Hardware and Sound
  5. Click Device Manager (the last link under Devices and Printers)
  6. Find the device you are trying to uninstall by expanding the appropriate set of devices
  7. Right click the device
  8. Click Uninstall (do not click OK in the dialog box that pops up after hitting Uninstall)
  9. Put a tick in Delete driver software for this device (if this option is available, otherwise just hit OK) and hit OK
  10. DO NOT restart your computer

Normally, you would want to restart your computer after uninstalling a driver, but for Atheros drivers, it causes problems. For some reason, Windows has difficulties with these network adapter drivers.

Just to confirm before I uninstall the old driver: the new atheros driver zip file I downloaded has no setup.exe that I can see. Will it still install?

After trying everything I could think and all that was recommended, short of doing an OS re-install, failed to solve this problem and finally resorted to uninstalling and completely removing the Nortel VPN client. At the moment this is the longest I have gone without a BSOD or problematic startup of any sort in the year I have been using this laptop. Even though I can no longer access the intranet, it's no matter: problem solved.

Glad to see it solved, though I am sorry to see you cannot access the intranet. :( You may be able to find another method to do so with a little research. You are welcome to post a new thread in other parts of SevenForums (software, hardware and devices perhaps?) and see if others can give you more options.
