Random freeze/crash/BSOD's Please Help

Hello all! This is my 1st post in the forums but it comes under bad circumstances.

Ever since I installed Sims 3(and since removed) for my daughter on my PC it has been crashing a lot. Sometimes I'll go to the CPU and that little box saying "windows is recovering from an unexpected shutdown"

Other times I'll be playing a game that I never had problems with before and the screen will turn black with lots of colour lines in it plus a buzzing sound. Then the cpu crashes.

I have checked all my drivers and I believe they are all up to date. I'm tapped out of knowledge at this point and I am not sure where to look next.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

This crash doesn't have specific causes listed.

The dump file show a bug check value 0X3b, this is usually a graphic's driver, other possibilities are antivirus/antispyware/security programs, RAM, Hard drive, loose cables.

Let's start with installing a new ATI Graphics driver
1. First un-install the old driver, Download and install Driver Sweeper from:
Guru3D - Driver Sweeper
2. Uninstall 'ATI Catalyst Install Manager' from Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features
Go to Control Panel, View by: Small or Large icons in Device manager. In Device manager select Display Adapters.

3. In Display Adapters right-click on your device and select uninstall. Tick the box that says 'Delete the driver software for this device'

4. Re-Boot into Safe Mode and run Driver Sweeper, to ensure complete removal of items, Run Driver Sweeper as administrator. Right-click Driver Sweeper > properties > Compatibility tab tick 'Run this program as Administrator'.

5. In Driver Sweeper select the ATI- Display only and then Analyse:

6. Now select Clean to remove all ATI software:

7. Re-boot normally and install the newest ATI official drivers.


Then stress test your graphics card, Video Card - Stress Test with Furmark
Your temps shouldn't go over 90°C.


If you still get crashes, re-install the graphics drivers without Catalyst Control Center.

First off, thank you so much for your help! I tried all the things you mentioned.

I uninstalled the current driver, deleted the files associated via the check box. Ran analyze and clean with driver sweeper, rebooted and installed the new driver both with and without Catalyst Control Center. I ran the Furmark video stress test and the cpu didnt freeze or crash. The card got up to 89 degrees.

Since then during gameplay the cpu has crashed again and again. Sometimes after 5 minutes, sometimes after 20. On some crashes it will flash a black screen with color lines through it and shutdown. Sometimes it will just freeze.

The cpu has crashed when the card has been anywhere between 60 and 70 degrees. Should I do tests on RAM or something else next?

Have you removed the Graphics card and re-seat it?
Make sure it is pushed down completely, sometimes it will require some force.

Your description, 'black screen with color lines through it', points to a graphics card problem.
Do you have another card you can test with, or borrow one?

This should be the first thing to check.


Next, follow the steps in this tutorial. You can leave all your RAM cards in for the first test. Best to let it run overnight.
RAM - Test with Memtest86+
When you run memtest86+ you are looking for bad RAM cards, bad motherboard slots, so you need to follow the testing procedure in the tutorial.
Sometimes errors from these tests can be corrected by adjusting the settings.

D/L CPUZ and post a snip of the CPU, Mainboard, Memory, and SPD tabs.

For posting the information , enter 'Snipping tool' in the Start button > Search box, hit enter. Select the area you want to post and save to a convenient place.

Have you been checking your temperatures?

Use Core Temp, to check the CPU temps when at idle, under load and/or testing.
Let us know the minimum and maximum temps you get.
Go to your BIOS and tell us what the CPU, RAM and the CPU integrated memory controller voltages are.


Disconnect the Fantom Drive for testing purposes, see if SIW will tell you the HDD manufacturer - SIW - System Information for Windows
Then D/L and run Seagate SeaTools on the OS hard drive – Short Drive Self Test and Long Drive Self Test


Start at the top of the list and do one test at a time, let us know the results.

I ran memtest for 12 passes with no errors at all.

I ran Seagate Sea tools and no errors were found with both the long and short tests.

Here are the settings from the bios (not sure if these are the numbers you are looking for:
Target Turbo Core: 4176 Mhz
Target CPU Frequency: 3712 Mhz
Target DRAM: 1237 Mhz
CPU Level up: Auto
CPU Bus: 232
PCIE: 100

I'll add the Core Temp temps later but I do know the card gets up to 70 degrees if enough "action" is happening in game.

The RAM settings look ok, and passing memtest86+ should rule the RAM out as a cause, same with your HDD passing the SeaTools test.

For the BIOS setting I'm looking for the voltages, CPU, RAM and the CPU integrated memory controller voltages.
You have posted the frequencies.

All but the CPU voltages in CPUZ are recommended settings and not actual.

Core Temps are important, if your system is overheating it can cause these crashes.

Did you try re-seating the graphics card?

Can you post the PSU information?

Post the new crash dump attachments.
