Random restarting

I tried playing Left4Dead and my comp kept shutting down randomly, dunno wtf was going on.

Try monitoring your CPU temperature with CoreTemp or something similar, Left 4 Dead uses the Source engine which is relatively cpu intensive.

I doubt that's the problem, I was running it on a new comp I had bought like a day earlier.

Well, if the system specs in your profile are current, then I would say gaming on a laptop like that would not be very good anyways. Just because the computer is new doesn't mean it's fast enough. 2 GHz doesn't really seem like much these days. Although, if it's a laptop, then it should be easy to tell whether or not it's overheating.

Random restarts while something is in progress using hardware ressource are often caused by your Memory. If you have some modules i would check that first... in fact that this happens only while playing games...

Yolu get those restarts also by idling on your desktop?

Edit:
Ah i see you have a Notebook... maybe this happens because of the save power settings of your Bios.... maybe you haveto disable them...

Wow, I just found out the source of my burning smell. It wasn't the CPU, it wasn't the PSU. It was, in fact, the 4-pin molex to ATX12V CPU connector adapter. More specifically, both of the "yellow" pins on the CPU side were completely burned/blackened/melted (also explains why the thing was so dang hard to pull out). A quick sniff confirmed my discovery. Weird, since the CPU voltage and everything was normal...
