Realtek 8185 wireless connection problem in w7 x64

Hi Computerplus. Yes i had done a reboot of the network. As to the driver for the router. I've been using whatever driver windows 7 installed for the router as i had misplaced the disk (although the firmware is updated to current using the netgear smart wizard at 192.168.1.1). I didn't think it was a router issue as my other USB wireless card worked fine in connecting as did my housemates pc, my laptop and xbox.

Anyway...the wireless card seems to be working now. I uninstalled the driver and removed the card. Then inserted my wireless card from my old pc that always worked with my router. This old card (linksys w/speedbooster) didnt work in windows 7 either (it wouldn't even let the device work at all in device manager). I then removed this card and inserted the 8185 again. Now it works fine and has connected perfectly for over a week now.

One thing i did notice is that when my pc was put together the wireless card is very close to the graphics card, which is huge. As the graphics card fan was rubbing off the wireless card a piece of foam had been inserted between the two cards to keep them apart. This resulted in the wireless card being warped somewhat in its slot. When i reinserted the card i positioned the foam so as to bend the card the least and it worked fine from the moment the pc was turned back on. If it goes back to the way it was i will re-post and let people know!

Bruce

I also tried the old card/new card thing but no result

Hi Bruce.

I also ripped out an old PCI wireless netcard from an old PC. The card was an Level One model WNC-301 and it did not recognize that at all. It just displayed as "other device" or something like that and I had to update the driver myself by pointing out what it was and what driver I wanted to use but the message just was that it would not start.

After having given that a try for a couple of hours I gave up and put in the Digitus wireless that was purchased with the PC again but I was not as lucky as you because it was just a step back to square one again.

Cold boot of both PC and router but did not help.

Hi Computerplus.

I switched off the power to both the router and the PC. Then I switched on the Zyxel router and then the PC. Internet connection works fine for 10 minutes and then not at all even though Windows says that nothing is wrong. I can still ping url addresses in a command prompt but I cannot access web addresses. It reacts slow and declares that page cannot be shown or site cannot be reached or if I am "lucky" it will download the html-page within 2 minutes.

I moved the PC to the next room in which the router stands on a shelf. I plugged in a cable to the LAN-card on the PC and powered up. That works just great - of course. No problems what so ever even after an hour. The network connections says that both the LAN and the wireless is connected. If I pull out the cable and let it continue on the wireless it will either be a problem right away or only a few minuts will pass before it will become a problem.

Again the same sitation as before. I am sitting here writing this reply on sevenforums on my Asus while looking at the PC and the Asus does not have a problem.

Just shoot me please .. put me out of my missery.

Kind regards,
Henrik Berg Andersen

ehh ok ... I will try and do that. Although the router does not have a list of permitted MAC addresses setup. It is possible of course but I did not do that.

change the MAC address of the adapter itself not the router, you can setup MAC address filtering in the router to only allow specified MAC addresses network access

Changing MAC is not possible

I tried to find net address in the properties of the wireless adapter but such a property was not there to access. It was possible to find on the Realtek 8185 PCI Family Adapter b/g but that is just for the cable. Just to try it out I changed the MAC on that and that works fine for the cabled connection but of course does not have any effect on the wireless.

Yes the router is set up with no fancy pancy. No MAC filtering, no hiding the SSID (I can see it easily in Windows), no broadband limitations, no fixed IP. The only thing there is WEP-key encryption but that works fine for 2 other computers in the house in wireless connection. And it does work fine for 5 minutes on my sons PC with problems.

Are you saying that I should try without the basic security of the WEP-key ?

in Windows 7 the MAC adress needs to start from 12 XX XX XX XX XX (You can put any number after 12) for example 12 A6 57 32 76 D4

you can try Mac Makeup MAC changing software for windows 7

Have you tried unclicking ipv6 in your adapters properties settings? This new protocal has been known to cause problems.

Hi

I have a similar problem like you do (brand new computer, Win7 64bit, realtek 8185 on wifi pci card). The main problem is there are not proper win7 64bit drivers for Realtek 8185. The Realtek Site offers Win7 UI&driver download, which is basicly Vista 64bit driver. With that driver I have serious trouble with signal (30-40%) and completely bad connection.

Solution is simple: uninstall previous Realtek Utility&Driver from Control Panel and install XP 64bit driver. I have now 80-100% signal and I'm finally able to load web pages in decent time.

Recommended way of installation: Find your Realtek 8185 in windows Device Manager. Right click and select Update device driver. In opened window select Search in computer (second option). Then Select from list and there click on button labelled "From disk". There you select path to your unrared WinX64 folder. And then just confirm everything. I'm not using English language in Windows, so you have to find out yourself as I do not know exact names of the options.

It has some drawbacks still; sometimes it drops off the connection and sometimes is awfully slow too. Despite this - better than nothing. Hopefully someone releases working Win7 drivers soon (I've heard it's also caused in combination with WEP, but I haven't had a chance to prove that yet).
