I have found plenty of threads with the same problem claiming to be solved but none have manage to fix my problem im afraid, plus i am not technical enough to follow a lot of the instructions so dare not try them. So here is my problem, i was on the internet and it seemed windows crashed everything said not responding then wouldn't load. So felt that i had no other choice but to switch off the PC as it had stayed like this for a long time, when i came to reboot i got a message saying 'Reboot or select proper boot device'
I am using an Acer Aspire X3450 PC and don't have the recovery disk but i do have an Acer Aspire laptop with the disk, when i put that in the PC it loads up giving me the option to Restore but it wont let me select it or highlight it. So downloaded a copy of windows 7 as a torrent and burned it to a disk in the hope i could re-install windows. This will allow to go into options like startup repair but wont repair anything as it will only seem to recognise the OS on the disk. So i removed the disk and all that happens is the same reboot error. I can't re-install windows as it will not allow me to. I am lost so i am writing everything i have encountered so far sorry it is so much but don't want to miss anything.

Make it sure that the 100 MB hidden system partition is marked as active.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/71432-partition-mark-active.html

Then run startup repair, for three separate times, with restarts after every single run.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/681-startup-repair.html

Thanks for the reply.
I have looked at the hidden partition and on that part it says for both disk 0 and disk 1 no media, so there is nothing to select. i followed the exact steps but have no joy finding the partition

Don't know if this will help but i have tried uploading Ubuntu to see if i can get back on to the PC, whilst trying to detect system files it comes up with an error saying 'Input/Output error during read on/dev/sdc' then stops installing and boots me back to the main screen with an error saying 'The creation of swap space in partition #5 of SCSI 1 (0,0,0) (sdc) failed'

Also whist doing the initial set up for Ubuntu it told me that i had no operating system on my PC.

I have followed the steps, downloaded the correct iso file, burned it to a dvd and i am stuck at a microsoft loading screen, this has been stuck on this for atleast half an hour now. Should it take this long to get to the language screen?

Nope, it should be quicker than that.

Try burning again but a slower speed (say 4x) if you haven't already. Also, unplug all external and internal drives, with the exception of the drive with the Windows 7 installation.

Thanks. Ok so i just gave that a go and it says 'There is no partition on this disk to show'

Ouch! OK, essentially it looks like the partition/s Windows needs to boot is completely gone. I'm not entirely sure how this can be rescued - also taking into consideration you tried to install Ubuntu to the disk...

Is there data on this disk you would like to recover if possible?
