Hi,

I've been trying to reset a windows 2003 password on a domain. I first blanked the local administrator's password (with a bootable usb), then I logged into with F8 into active directory restore mode. So it worked without any passwords.
Then I followed these instructions (Seb's Corner)

So there's a service running every time windows boots up that changes the password. This password, which I set, doesn't work anymore. So every time when I try to blank the local administrator's password, and then log in again into the active directory restore mode, it doesn't work. So I cannot change that service anymore.

Any idea how to delete the service and try to recover the password?

Having a bootable USB or CD, you can boot from there and just rename the service .exe, so it doesn't runs anymore. Or with an offline registry editor, setting this service to manual. That of course needs physical access and an unencrypted OS partition.

I would be interested in why it's doing such thing. Do you know to what it's changing the password? And why it's doing that?

It's solved. I was wrong. It wasn't changing the local password, only the domain. I didn't follow the instructions carefully. But now it's fine. The link was correct. Thanks
