My Dell Studio XPS 16 motherboard failed but I was able to get the hard drive out of my computer and connected to my desktop using a case that makes it act as an external hard drive.

I now am trying to copy the old files from the Dell hard drive to my new computer's hard drive but some of the folders are password protected and didn't copy with the rest of the old C drive.

Clicking on some of these folder brings up a dialog box informing me I do not have privilege to see those files and I canceled out of the dialog box as I was worried I might accidentally erase the folder if I did not unlock it properly. Both computers were most recently running Windows 7 though the old Dell laptop originally came installed with Windows Vista.

What are the steps for recovering these files?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you right click on the file, do you see in the Menu, "Take Ownership"? If so, left click on it and you should then be allowed to access the file. If you don't see "Take Ownership", then you need to go through the Tutorial again because something was skipped.
