RedFox Laptops

I picked a RedFox WizBook W1130i around 3-4 years back for my Mom and it came with Windows 7 Home Basic. Until now, it still does everything she needs to do (basic browsing, streaming, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.) and I keep it maintained.

I'm thinking of picking a RedFox Notebook PC for a friend (for use in school). What are general opinions about the brand?

They come in nice colors - that's all I know, LOL.

But there are sooo many choices these days. I would suggest you go with a mainstream brand rather than this very unusual make - even if it is popular in your country. It is though a matter of price.

For hauling around, this is a very nice option that I bought last week. But it may be out of your price range.

I've not heard of RedFox since it's a Philippine brand apparently. You have had good experience with them though.

It is though a matter of price.

Indeed. She only has roughly around 15000PHP (approx. 333USD), no more no less.

Luckily, we have had a good experience with the WizBook. We also bought this 14-inch LCD monitor around the Pentium 4 era to which it still works today.

I have only personally gauged ASUS, MSI, and RedFox.

When choosing laptops, I'm quite particular with ones that come with a driver disc (for longevity purposes, even after end of official support).

Is Acer a decent one to "haul around" for moderate school/mild gaming use?
Do their models come with a driver disc?

Acer is OK in the low price sector. Then, of course, it depends on the exact model. Why don't you pick one and we'll have a look.

I had never heard of RedFox until you mentioned them. As far as inexpensive laptops go I usually recommend Toshiba. Any of these on this page I'm linking to would be a decent deal for that kind of money. They DO come with a fair amount of bloatware but thats easy enough to get rid of. My personal experience with Toshiba support was awesome, easily the best I've ever had. Good hardware, good support, what more can you ask for? They won't come with a separate driver disc but again those are easy enough to make.

They rarely come with any disk Kathy. As Scott said you can make one. going to the machines support page, there should be a Drivers Download section, grab them all and burn a disk or put on a pendrive.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I have been particular with ASUS, MSI, and RedFox for the driver discs. Some of the few manufacturers that come with them. A thing I miss with the old days, along with print manuals/documentation.

After some time though, manufacturers would pull down the driver downloads from their websites. The CD is what I consider a kind of "insurance". I wasn't able to back up the drivers for the RedFox WizBook (for some reason I can't fathom), but luckily, the driver disc was there to save the day. Insurance plan success. But yes, I'll make sure to back up the drivers from the website while they're still up.

I'm currently looking at Acer and Toshiba as well. Toshiba is good on the price range. With Acer, I seem to be getting around the 800USD-900USD.

Can anyone suggest a good Acer Notebook model? It's okay if the model not in the Philippine website.

The person I'm picking it for is a college student. She intends to do moderate web browsing/streaming, casual gaming, watching movies (mini 720p HD quality), and the "Office Trinity" (word processing, presentations, spreadsheets). She's on a ~333USD budget.

What I meant was, the Acer laptops I'm finding on the Philippine website range from 800-900USD, but the actual budget is only 333USD. An "average" laptop that can fit my friend's budget would be nice. If possible, at least i3 processor.

Kathy, I don't know how it is in your neck of the woods. But around here the offerings, prices and models change every week.

Every Sunday we get the ads from the brick and mortar stores and they always have stuff that's different from last week. Prices have been constantly down. Today I saw a 15" Windows 8.1 laptop with i3, 4GB of RAM, 500GB HDD and touchscreen for $399.

This is to say that you should look what's best price/performance this week. I would not fix myself on a certain make/model.
