I have a 500GB external hard drive which, when new, I reformatted (using another piece of software) to NTFS and partitioned it into 3 partitions, which were assigned the letters K, L and M. At the time I did this I was running Win XP.

I now have a different PC running Win 7 Home Premium 64bit and want to reformat the EHD, wiping it clean and removing 2 of the partitions to make it just the 1 in order to make a fresh start.

Can anyone advise me how to go about this preferably without needing to access any other software.

Thank you so much.

Plug in the external drive and go to Computer. Right click the drive and click Format, that will do the format and remove the partitions.

Thank you Britton30. I eventually managed it. I had trouble deleting the 2 partitions I wanted rid of but that was down really to my ignorance and inexperience.
Anyway everything is ok now and I can set about copying the stuff over which I want saved.

Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction...

formatting the HDD wont change the partition structure, but can help you to clean up your storage,
