Registering A File

After installing Java, for some reason it didn't go well, and when I try to use some features, it pops a dialog saying that it can't find msvcr71.dll and to reinstall the program. Instead of reinstalling it, I found the missing file in the Java directory and copy/pasted it to my browser's plugin directory, but the error keeps reappearing.

I tried to use regsvr32 to register it, but it said that it couldn't find the file and to check the path. It seems that I will never get the knack for command lines, but this is what I typed into cmd:

C:\Users\wallwalker>regsvr32 C:\\Program Files(x86)/DevelMan/Java/bin/new_plugin
/msvcr71.dll

Would someone please correct this for me?

you have two slashes after the c: and there should only be one, and the all the others go in the wrong direction.

regsvr32 "C:\Program Files (x86)\DevelMan\Java\bin\new_plugin\msvcr71.dll"

(you also need quotes)

Thanks, I tried that, but got a different error...any idea of what it means, or better yet, how to fix it?

Without knowing what the error was, it would be very difficult to diagnose.

The file may be corrupt. Try reinstalling the software package.

My suggestion at this point is to use System Restore and go back to a point in time before you tried to install Java, and then try again.

hey i had the same error not so long ago all i did was copy that file you have into C:windows/system32 and never had it since

I don't advise moving files around. Java is a well established application and if the installation failed, which it did, you are going to have further problems. Fix it now while you can. See my previous post.

I got away from this problem for a whlle, because of other problems that I had to deal with. I just came returned and backtracked. running into the same error with regsvr32 as before. I did reinstall Java after doing a system restore for another problem, but even trying the idea of copying the file into system32 didn't work. For some reason, even though I marked the original msvcr71.dll with .old, it wouldn't copy the new file into the directory. Before marking it old, when I tried to paste the file the window with copy/replace, etc. options opened, but that is when I reverted to marking the file old as I mentioned.

I'am beginning to think that there is something about the latest version of Java that just doesn't agree with W7. I may try an older version instead.

For what it is worth, I installed the newest Java on Win 7 32 bit in the last day or two and haven't noticed any issues:

Sorry, there's nothing conflicting with Java and 7. There's something broken on your system if it won't install.

Do this:


Updating Java:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
• Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u17 allows end-users to run Java applications".
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
• The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Programs and Features and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u17-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

I think you have to install Java for each browser you use. So if you run both IE and Firefox, you would have to install it for each, separately.

All is well, until I reach the part about removing previous versions. Since I use multiple browsers, some of which are x64 and some not, I assume that I only need to remove the x32 version of Java, since it is my x32 Opera browser with the problem?
