But ....

Using Registry Cleaners gives all something do here. To hunt down odd problems.
They are job security ... or volenteer security , and make things more interesting.
:p

But seriously, I agree, steer clear of them.

Comodo System Cleaner is good.

Matt, I would feel better about their Registry cleaner if we didn't sometims solve problems here by removing Comodo.

It doesn't seem like a hard choice: "Do I use the most highly respected app in all of the tech world (CCleaner) or do I use one which no one's heard of?"

I remember a couple of years back I was hooked on Auslogics Boost Speed for tweaking Vista and XP into a fast state. During the WIn7 beta period, we learned (often the hard way) that Win7 would no longer tolerate these tweaks and was becoming a perfectly balanced OS which requires no tweaking whatsoever.

It needs only CCleaner and a state-of-the-art defragger like Auslogics or Defraggler, and some experts think it doesn't even need that.

But all the experts here seem to agree that for best performance use free MS Security Essentials or Avast 5 with the Win7 Firewall.

Hi im new here,
But what about TuneUp utilities that program has a system recovery inside the boot just click down and the system goes back to its last backup of the registry... and has registry security fixes etc and the turbo mode... that program is ok to have on the w7?

Hmm.. i'm not a fan of TuneUp Utilities, and i'm sure there's a lot of members here who think the same.

Like Greg said:

I suggest the same.. :)

If you don't know how Registry Cleaner works - then just leave it alone. Windows Vista and 7 does not require a Registry Cleaner.
If you are going to remove the left overs from an uninstalled program - use CCleaner.

Is this right? Really, are these PC Utilities/Registry Cleaner programs all bullcrap? Are they really more harm than good?

Because when I had my prevoius laptop, I used Advanced System Optimizer and it never gave me any problems. Now I have a new laptop and have CCleaner because this thread says that, apparently, Windows 7 doesn't need repairing.

I'm surprised :/

Dear Kratos Aurion,
Your QUOTE" Now I have a new laptop and have CCleaner because this thread says that, apparently, Windows 7 doesn't need repairing."UNQUOTE is generalized! Every OS needs to be taken care by, 1)removing the crap by using the ccleaner which you have installed, 2) Defraggler to consolidate the scattered fragments and to 3)prevent repairs by using Backup and Restore softwares like Macrium Reflect OR Easeus Todo backup Home etc.

If you have noticed the trend of debate in this thread, wrangling with the registry is not safe for the majority of people! Geeks who know the intricacies of dealing with the registry will be the first ones to warn us to leave the registry alone! The uniblue reg.tweaker shows on my pc 760 registry problems which need urgent correction and i should buy their product! My computer till date is firing on the Autobahns like a Porsche and i can live with that!

I do not know anything about the registry, except it's location ! As one of the signature tunes of one of our very senior members (Tews??) says, break it until it needs a fix (in a humorous vein)!

regards,
Sreedhav

About five years ago I ignored this advice and started playing with the XP Registry and Group Policy editor settings. Needless to say I hosed MANY fine installations of Window's 2000 to XP. From locking myself out from the computer to breaking vital Window's components functionality. Of course I'm all the wiser now and know how to handle those tools!

I will say this, there are areas CC Cleaner does not clean out. For entries falling into those areas I target and remove them manually.

If you have noticed the trend of debate in this thread, wrangling with the registry is not safe for the majority of people!

Hmmm, I've used CleanMyPC registry cleaner on Xp, vista, and 7 and I've always seen overall system performance go up. The only time it went terribly wrong was when I used the vista version on 64 bit 7....completely killed it. :(

Honestly, from my years of experience, registry cleaners DO help. For example, with Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 being a pretty major software package installed on your machine, when you uninstall it it commits jihad on the registry. Boot time goes from a solid 30 seconds to over a minute. Windows Explorer can act like vista, you open more than two windows and it freaks out. With a decent registry cleaner, it can take errors out and also defrag it. That's actually the most important there, defragmentation of the registry. Make sure the program you use has defragmentation capabilities.

And also, with use of 7 and registry cleaning and defragging, I can tell you for sure that the most you'll ever do it is probably one or two times every two weeks. Unless if you constantly install and uninstall major software that is. The NT 6.1 kernel is much more stable than 6.0. Yep.

Well, I've tried both KIS 2011 and BitDefender Internet Security 2011 and uninstalled them using their respective removal tools provided. There was no change in boot time or anything. Probably these tools not only uninstall the application but clean-up leftovers as well as registry entries :geek:

I've used a Registry Cleaner (Uniboot) and it made a significant drop in performance and I am getting unwanted programs and ads.
CCleaner so far is the only safe registry cleaner I've tested from 50 registry cleaners.

Win 7 doesn't need a TuneUp Utility - it can speed up it self. If you want to speed up your computer, you need to upgrade decent hardware (i.e: 512MB or 1GB RAM, less than 1.7GHz). On the other hand, XP does.

Yeah, I currently use KIS 2011 and had to uninstall it three times so far since it seems to be not totally like 64 bit Windows, and it doesn't actually kill the boot time or registry so much anymore, so YAY! :D

The removal tools do get rid of the registry entries, hence, complete removal....;)

I find Auslogics registry cleaner/defrager works well for me, I have also used Ccleaner in the past as well, which also works well, I think the Auslogics registry cleaner works a bit better IMO

CCleaner Disk and Registry tabs, followed by Auslogics Disk and Registry defraggers has worked for me for over ten years on hundreds of installs without issue.

However recently I've been testing Puran defragger which is immensely impressive, especially it's Intelligent Optimizer on the Additional Operations tab. It handles it all during the boot time defrag. Awesome tool.

I echo the voice of the people here. CCleaner is the best choice while dealing with Registry.

I don´t try other alternatives (well, one or other program in one or another moment), but CCleaner is small, fast, and never bring me any problem. :)

I used Reg Cleaner and Reg Supreme Pro on dozens and dozens of XP builds over the last 8 or more years years without a single issue.
Unfortunately theses programs aren't compatible with Win 7.

After installing a fresh copy of XP, moving files over from external drives, installing all programs and getting a new machine just the way I wanted it and after making an image I would then finally run Reg Supreme Pro in deep scan mode.

The program would usually find and safely remove around 900 invalid registry entries without a single hitch.

I really wish that the author of Reg Supreme Pro would build a reg cleaner compatible with win 7.

I have yet to find a trustworthy deep scanning registry cleaner for Windows 7 and that's a shame. :(

It's freeware, which time and again is the best choice. You tend to pay for useless, smothering bloat.

Open source and smaller freeware-driven companies are often where the real Genius hides from being Corpulated and enCorpsed.

I have yet to find a trustworthy deep scanning registry cleaner for Windows 7 and that's a shame. :(

I would run from any program with "Reg" in it's title. Most of these are sales scams without a synapse of genius. Stick with proven CCleaner.
