I have 7 Home Premium 64 Bit. I was in the registry and noticed something. Under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT> I have Unknown and Unknown_BU. I was wondering if this is normal. I checked a 32 Bit version and it does not have a Unknown_BU. Maybe someone who has 64bit version could check theirs foe me? I think I'm having an issue with the "open with" dialog box.

I have HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Unknown but not Unknown_BU. Also HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Unknown\shell\openas\command\. This subkey is actually the action to open the "Open With" box for "unknown" files when windows can't find the suitable application to open a file with.
Backup your reg before playing in it. ;)

I only have the unknown key:

regunk.PNG

For background:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/178066-open-add-program.html

And this may fix your problem, the download in step #1 will reset your unknown key to default: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/129260-open-opening-notepad-error-fix.html
Check the bottoms of both tutorials there may be another tutorial under Related Tutorials that may apply to your situation.

As to the unknown_bu, that looks like a backup to the unknown key. You've been getting any error or warning messages?

If you haven't done it recently: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/4230-registry-backup-restore.html

Thanks everyone. I don't actually get error messages always. The issue is when I try to open a file (PDF) received in yahoo mail, using Google Chrome, I do get an error and no way to get "open with". Sad thing is it works using IE and Firefox. You click download on the file and a dialog box opens at the bottom where you can "open", "save", or "cancel" in IE and in FF you get the "open with" dialog box. To make it worst, another PC (same model #) will give the option to "open with" using Google Chrome. I googled a little and found things pointing to the registry. Then I found the entries in the registry I referred to in the original post. Additionally, there have been numerous users over the past years on this particular PC including several small children.

I was thinking about doing a repair install to ensure the OS was good to go. I did an sfc /scannow and found no issues. I would really like to wipe this puppy and start all over but they have Office 2007 and MS has no download for it (I spoke with them). So, would a repair install hurt? Could the OS have some issues even though the scannow showed nothing?

It shouldn't, but read the top three boxes before you start: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

Could the OS have some issues even though the scannow showed nothing?
We usually suggest to run the SFC scan at least three times with reboots in between to be sure, see the blue note box in option two: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

You could also run a CHKDSK before you run those SFC scans.

Do you have an OS backup before you do the repair?

Ran chkdsk. Also ran scannow 3x and all is good.

Not sure what you mean by OS backup. Can you elaborate?

Yes, a system image is what I had in mind, it would have read better if I would have said; Do you have the operating system (OS) backed up before you do the repair?

My apologies for any confusion, and thanks bigmck for the clarification. I was in a bit of a rush this morning and my proofreading was off.

No problem Anak. Heck, it takes me 2 cups of coffee and at least an hour before I am functioning. I appreciate your help.

I am going to attempt a system image and a restore on a laptop of mine for practice prior to doing anything with the PC. FYI- I am a student in college for PC support and networking. I have done it with CDs before a long time ago but have never did it with a USB external drive. I started a thread in the backup and restore area on this site to help me with it. May take a day or so to get response. Looks like that forum is not having much activity. I can kill the laptop but I cannot kill the PC.

Thank you everyone for responding!!!!!!!!

You're welcome,

Using that USB drive should just be a matter of telling your Imaging program where to send the image/backup.

This is using windows backup, see #2:
Back Up Manually
Once you’ve configured automated backups, you can use the settings to run a backup manually at any time. Simply open Backup And Restore, and then click Back Up Now. If you want to manually create a system image backup, follow these steps:

1.
In Control Panel, under the System And Security heading, click the Back Up Your Computer link. In the left pane, click Create A System Image.

2.
On the Where Do You Want To Save The Backup page, use the options pro¬vided to specify a backup location. Click Next.

3.
On the Which Drives Do You Want To Include In The Backup page, the com¬puter’s system drive is selected by default. You cannot change this selection, but you can add other drives to the backup image by selecting the related check boxes. Click Next to continue.

4.
Click Start Backup.

Sorry for the delay getting back but I had to practice on making a system image and restoring on another PC before doing it on this PC. Doing a repair install solved my issue. The registry was wacked. Now my registry show just the Unknown and the contents are correct. When I open the unkown doc I get the open with box.
