Im a little nervous about that. I have hosed one system, and several users as well. Currently Im only using it when the system is already buggy. SFC has changed permissions (no big deal), has changed themes, locked users logon.

Judicious use I think. You know there is a switch that verifies only but doesn't repair. that way you could check but only fix when you decide to. BTW its fsc /verifyonly

hmm well its purpose is to check the integrity of system files and restore them isnt it? I wonder if it would take officially updated system files from windows update into account or rollback to original versions.

I dont know exactly how it works nick but suspect MS is smart enough not to roll it back to default

A command line in the form sfc /verifyonly >> c:\sfc.txt added to the task scheduler would run the command and create a file containing the output, which you could then check at your leisure.

Just make sure this is set to run with the highest privileges to avoid access denied errors

Hi Ken,

SFC is one of those commands that I, like you, like to keep an eye on when it's running.

It should be possible to write a batch file to be run when required for little checks like this and include a restore point as the first instruction to be sure things are safe.

Will try to have a look when I have a few minutes

Thanks Nigel. Restore is not as critical for me as I run acronis, but having a restore point is always a good ides.

Cool. I use that every so often to make sure files haven't been corrupted or tampered with.

Another tool that can do it is Autoruns when you check the "verify code signatures" option.

If you have modified your icons or themes, then running sfc/ scannow will reset them to default. It "fixes" the uxtheme patches that non-standard icons/themes need.
