Hey everyone,

I just joined these forums today, and I have very little "forum experience", so bare with me.

My desktop PC had windows XP x86. I went down and bought a Catalyst 7770 1GB video card and attempted to install it. The install disk for the video card didn't have 32-bit XP drivers on it, so I decided to go ahead and make a system image of my laptop, which is running Windows 7 64 bit, and put it on my desktop. I used Norton Ghost to do this and had no issues during this process. I rebooted the PC and everything came up just fine. I had to install the video card via the install disk with no incident. Windows 7 seemed to be able to find drivers for all other devices with no issue. The only problem I have now is; every few minutes the entire computer hangs up... freezes... stops... No error messages at all. It lasts for about 4-7 minutes... which is a long time for just sitting here waiting on it to work. Also, seconds after it hangs up, the light on the bottom of my laser mouse goes off.... when it comes back on, I know the computer is working again. I started the task manager to see if I saw any processes start or stop when this happens, and I didn't notice anything. The system resources don't max out.

In fact, it has done this 4 times since I started writing this post. Does anyone have any ideas about this? My laptop does not have this issue, so it makes me thing its something hardware related.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

~Sion

SionCross,
Hello Houston--We have a problem!

One license = 1 machine
One machine = 1 license.

Spazgadget does ask a valid question since you had XP on there before.

If you had a working OS on that desktop, we would recommend:
Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor - Download - Microsoft Windows

which would let you know if your desktop is partially, fully, or not all Win 7 capable.

Still have your XP discs around so that:
1. you will have a legal system,
2. you can run some software to help us to help you.

I am not sure, I will look into it. Thanks for the reply!

Karlsnooks-
For clarification, the laptop I took the image from is one my employee gave me. I work for a Fortune 100 company thus they have purchased enough licenses. Yes I still have my XP home disk, but I would rather not go back to it. Since I started working for this company, they use windows 7 and I'm pretty spoiled to it.

I checked in the device manager, and under computer it says ACPI x64 based PC. Under Processors it has listed twice (since its dual core) Intel(R)Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.40 Ghz.

So I would think that would mean it supported 64-bit OS. Maybe I'm wrong...

If you want to use an enterprise license, which also must be validated, then definitely take your computer to your System Administator and let him take care of this problem since you want to use company software on the computer.

I will validate my copy of windows as soon as I get this problem resolved... I would do it now, but it locks up every 2-3 minutes. Let me see if I can get this done in between lock ups. After I have done this, what is the next step? I work in the IT department of this comany and yes several other members of IT have done the same thing with no issue. I even asked one of the "system administrators" today and she didn't have an answer. In the IT department I work in there are several "System Administrators". We run hundreds of different software applications and thus 1 person can't administer them all.

So I suppose everyone gave up on me because they think I have an illegal copy of windows?! I have the product ID and I have validated it online... what more can I do to prove it?
