Remote Assistance

Hey guys,

First of all a quick Hello to you as I am new to the forum!

I have a question and hoping someone can help me.

I am trying to set up a support system for a company where they have PC's on a local network behind the a router that is connected to the internet.

What they would like to be able to do is remotely control the pc's behind the router (The pc's are running XP and are not connected to the internet but are connected to the router that is)

They currently use something like logmein there it's done via a web application which runs very slow and is difficult for the customer to work with.

If you need to know any other information please ask.

Any help would be really appeciated.

Welcome Josh to the windows 7 Forums.

Logmein being slow could depend on several factors,
1. the internet access speed of your ISP
2. the memory and configuration of your windows XP systems.
3. A combination of the two.

If your internet speed is good then I would look at the configuration of your xp machines, AV and other TSR type programs that are running on them.

If what you want to do is to have the desktop available to other sites on-line. Then if your ISP speed is good and you want to give them access to an unattended PC, Logmein is one of the better ones.

If what you want to do is to help the user on their PC, then there are several remote programs that works well.
but most cost extra and can get expensive. GotoMyPC and Teamviewer are a couple that come to mind.


I would look at cleaning up the PC's and making sure that your ISP has enough speed for what you want to do.

The systems that I wish to log on to don't have any rubbish on them as they are bog standard units and are only used for one bit of software, however the spec of them are not fantastic but easily good enough to run logmein or anything similair.

Is it possible to use logmein if i want to connect to a machine that is not on the internet but behind a router that is on the internet? I guess that's the first thing I need to workout if not i need another way of doing it.

Have you used the windows default remote desktop program?

I have been told a way of doing it by creating a VPN on the machine?

yes, logmein normally does work on computers that are behind routers. Unless the sysadmin for the network has restricted the ports that logmein requires.
