Is there a way to remove the MSN Messenger icon from the taskbar while remaining logged in to Messenger?

I want the program to remain open, but I don't need it sitting in the taskbar all the time. In previous versions of Windows it would minimize to the notification area.

As far as I can tell there's no option for that.

Yes there is :P

I personally prefer the convenience of having it there in the taskbar, and really wish more programs would do the same, but if you want to remove it, all you have to do is go to

32bit: C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger
64bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Messenger

there, look for msnmsgr.exe, right click, go to properties. In the compatibility tab, select Windows Vista as the operating system for compatibility and when you next open messenger, it should minimize to the tray. Hope this helps! Also, credit to the original person who found this, I can't remember who =/

Windows MSN Messenger in compatibility mode

This worked, however, if you notice, you will see that when in Compatibilty mode (regardless of what OS you use, other than windows 7), that the memory usage climbs and climbs and climbs... Just sit there and watch it climb past 2gb. Not sure what bit of bad coding there is for MSN messenger in compatibility mode, but it uses a ton of memory over time.

If put back off compatibility mode, the memory usage stablizes.

I have tried this work-around on three systems and later noticed that the memory usage was getting higher usage... I tracked it down to the compatiblity mode work-around.

All three systems running windows 7, two Windows 7 64bit and 1 with Windows 7 32bit.

If anyone has another work-around, I am all eyes.
