renaming files - file name too large? how to disable this?

So I'm renaming some songs but when I do this I get this message:

But my filename is not that long! Here is how long I can make it before my keyboard does not enter characters. They just don't show up when I type.

Please tell me how to not see this message.

Chances are that the name you selected had invalid characters. Stay away from punctuation characters in the filename. Among the characters you cannot use are:

: \ ? / > < *

There probably are others, but I don't recall offhand what they are.

Names are allowed to be VERY long, so it's probably the "not valid" portion of the error that applies, not the "too long" portion.

Yeah it had a & in there and I removed it and it still said it was too long. The title is like 24 ch long but Win7 is being retarded and not letting me rename the song.

The limit is much higher than 24 chars. I know for a fact that it can be over 128. Length is not your problem.

Is this an external or an internal drive? An external drive MIGHT have more stringent rules when it comes to length of file name (including the full path name)

Right click on the filename while holding down the Shift key. Click "copy as path" in the context menu. Paste the path. Then we can see how long the path is. The path limit is 260 characters for Explorer.

I played around in Explorer when trying out the Path Too Long software. When you hit the limit, Explorer won't let you type any more characters. The total path cannot exceed 260. That's why I want to see the "copy as path" output. I'd be very surprised if the total path with the characters shown in the screen shot don't total to that number.

You can have longer paths created by programs. But Explorer won't let you type them in.
