Solved Repair tech installed a boot program

Had a disk issue with my system, took to a local repairman, he installed something that the system boots into. My system will not boot to safe, bios or any other mode. I can get into safe mode via msconfig.

The real issue I am trying to fix is iTunes is not working, says it has no program associated with it. wanted to get into safe mode with command prompt to run assoc.exe=exefile Any suggestions of wait to repairman to open and have him help me uninstall what ever software he installed???

HP desktop model number will come in handy.
Can you describe what the program it boots into says? Such as does it say "recovery" or does it have a logo or name?
I take it the f8 key does not take you to the boot choice screen but does the f8 do anything?

It is difficult to say what to do without knowing what program we are dealing with. I would also ask you to make sure there are no cd's or dvd's in the drives prior to boot. I can't tell you how many times I have seen a repair or scanning disk left in the drive by repair personnel cause boot issues.

HP Pavillion 6633, my system use to boot to a blue screen that told me what key to press to boot to different mode, now I get the ami bios info and some other system type info, says f10 will do something and then boots to windows. This is all on a black screen white text. It is like it is boot into a disk check mode. I have tried f10, f8, esc, f1, f2. all keys do nothing.

That is actually not a different program. I don't believe the tech actually installed any 3 party boot software. I believe what has happened is that screen is normally hidden unless you press f11 to boot into the HP recovery partition. It seems the tech may have made it visible in the bios.

According to HP the safe mode key is definitely f8 which should be repeatedly press as soon as the HP logo is displayed. Also the Bios boot is supposed to be f2 although some models used the esc key, HP does not say which key.

Now AMI on the other hand (the manufacture of your motherboard) says the DEL key enters the bios. but f8 is still the safe mode key. It is always my practice to start tapping the f8 key as soon as I power on the machine.

Lastly there is the issue with iTunes. Is iTunes the only program that is affected? It might be easier to download and reinstall iTunes from apple which will not affect your lists or imports, Providing iTunes is the only thing affected. if there are other affected programs then I would have to say malware might be the culprit. was iTunes broken before/during/after the tech looked at your machine?

Not sure when iTunes went bad, I am unable to get a clean uninstall without an error of file does not have a program associated with it. I am at a point where I am thinking I should just to another backup of my files and format the harddrive reinstall windows. The tech was unable to tell be what happened to my system. I am thinking it is time to start over??

Have you tried a repair install of iTunes? That is download iTunes from apple Apple and run the installer? I know most techs will tell you not to do that but installers have gotten smarter and can do a repair of an installed program. I would also suggest doing a system integrity scan.

Also please verify that iTunes is the only thing affected by the no associated program error.

i think if the initial screen displayed when switching on the pc has changed, it's probably due to the bios was flashed to newer version by the repairman. this will change the interface quite a bit and need some adaptation. but generally, accessing BIOS is mostly done by pressing del in a lot of different computers. then, in BIOS you can recheck the boot order of devices and make sure it's the one you want. also, there should be an option to bypass the current order of boot devices to the one you'd like to boot into directly. so, if current order is : 1.dvd drive 2.flash drive 3.hard drive, you can bypass n boot directly to hard drive even if there's a boot disc already inside the dvd drive. as for the itunes, i think the file association has been altered. i don't know if this will do or not, but check this link : iTunes for Windows in Windows XP or Windows 2000 doesn't open after upgrading

the system file checker is fine, no errors found. I just ordered the 5 disks to rebuild my system. Thank you so much for your time. I will keep playing with my iTunes issue. I also ran ccleaner reg check and the system is running a little faster. I think something is damaged in my files and just not up to par. I will most likely have to buy office 2010 again. That is the only issue that has kept me from rebuilding in the first place. again thank you for spending part of you day with me.

There is malware that will damage file associations luckily there is a way to repair it.

Why would you have to buy Office 2010 again ?

You shouldn't have to buy office again if you saved the key. I assume you installed from either a download or purchased from the preinstalled trial. Either way they emailed you a key provided you gave them a valid email. Just reinstall with the key they sent. if you can't find the key the log into office online Microsoft Office 2010 Backup - Office.com and get a copy of your product key. *again providing you gave them a valid email address*.
