Repeated update

For the past several days, I have been seeing what is apparently the same Windows update each time I shut down my computer. As soon as I power down, the screen says it is installing update 1 of 4 and it apparently completes the installation and shuts down normally. The next time I boot, it takes up to 20 minutes for the Windows splash screen to close and then I see a screen telling me that Windows is configuring 1 of 4 updates and not to shut the machine off. This message stays at 0% for several minutes than then finally enters my login screen.

I have swept my system for malware and emptied the User/App Data/Temp folder with no change.

Anyone know what might be going on here?

* We need the KB number to know what update you refer to.

* Have you checked in Event Viewer ?
Start - Event Viewer - Windows Logs - System & Application.
Check for any red error messages to do with this problem.

*Clean out yet again App data / local / temp.
Start - Run - type in %temp% - ok - organize - select all - organize - delete { note you may be asked to skip some - that is ok}

* Have you a System Restore point you can roll back to prior to this glitch with the update?
If so this could be worth trying.

* Re your update settings -
I suggest you change them to notify you but let you choose to download.
Do a few at a time only. {Tedious, but allows you to monitor for any problems.}

* Always make sure you have a current system restore point prior to downloading anything.

Well, things have taken a turn for the worse.

I did all the requisite file clearing and checked the event viewer and found nothing related to this. I finally tried a system restore to a point well before the problem began. After completing the restore, windows failed to start normally so I tried to start it in safe mode which failed as well. I tried a Windows repair from the Win7 installation disk but that failed as well.

I finally bit the bullet and did a fresh install of win 7 and while everything else is gone, the "1 of 4" update thing is still there. Everything including the registry was wiped... how could it still be happening?
