My laptop running windows 7 sp1 professional (via BootCamp) is failing to download and install windows updates. (Error 80080005 - "Windows is unable to check for updates"). I suspect that my system is hosed and that I will have to reinstall, but thanks in advance for any advice.

  • System Update Readiness Tool fails to install the hotfix.
  • SFC scan fails. "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service"
  • Virus and malware scans come up negative.
  • This Microsoft FixIt program fails to download any updates.
  • Logs attached.
Thanks in advance for any assistance

Hello madsent and welcome to Seven Forums.

Sometimes it's necessary to run SFC three or more times to fix problems. After running SFC at least 3 times and rebooting the computer after each scan, try the SURT again. (See Option Two, Step 4 note.)

If still no joy you could try doing a Repair Install. If successful it will fix your currently installed Windows 7 and preserve your user accounts, data, programs, system drivers, etc.

You have some major problems in the CBS log - and running SFC is not going to help.

Have you tried a System Restore back to a point when WU was working?

... I just realised that that log is over a year ago!

There is no way that SR can help over that period of time, and your best fix is going to be a repair install.
