Retiring Windows 7 Anyone Else?

I find Windows 7 much easier to use than XP, and much more costumizable too than XP was. It's also more responsive.

I believe that it's probably the person's computer, and the upgrade costs to both the computer and OS that is the problem here as some people install it on computers that are too weak for 7 and then whine that it's less responsive and slower than XP. No wonder when the computer was made for XP.

This is not you davewilldo so why are you acting like you started the thread and all the response now belong to you? If you have a thread I would be happy to come over and insult you personally.

Please allow me to confirm your statement that I did not start the thread.

As was made quite clear in my post:

My new computer runs Win7 64 bit, my old and trusty computer runs XP.
On the Win7 machine, all fonts are a bit "fuzzy."
On the XP machine, all fonts are clean and crisp.
Which machine do you think I use as my "workhorse?"
After a half hour with the Win7 computer I get headaches, and so I go back to my five-year old computer.
Now how did I know I'd just wasted a big chunk of money on the new Win7 computer? Uhh. . . . .
Maybe everybody will figger out the problem someday.

Try adjusting the cleartype text...

How you tried to adjust the cleartype tuner?

The new computer's screen res is set to 1360 x 768 - and it don't get much bettah dan dat nohow.

I've adjusted it all until I'm literally red in the face - blood pressure, doncha know? But seriously - I've tried everything that I - and a friend who works for Microsoft - can adjust/tweak/ etc.
Me thinks that Win7 is just too advanced for OpenOffice and Quicken?
Anyway - thank the gods of ether that I've still got the XP machine!

It must be your machine. Text is crisp and flawless in both quicken and office for me.

Get rid of Office . It's a beta version for advanced and experienced users and causes may many problems if yoiu search this forum.

I'm not using MS Office - but OpenOffice - if you don't know it, it is a free package, and being used by more and more people worldwide. Very good, BTW.

What else is different between your 2 computers?
Are you using the same monitor?

I have 2 pre-installed Windows 7 and updated the 3rd. laptop. All of a sudden I am not able to copy and paste into my Website editing program. I can type into it, but I need to continually update my affiliate links and I NEVER had this problem with XP or even Vista. I am really "teed off " And I want the ease of XP back.

Well, after a lengthy trial of Windows 7 I've decided to retire the blessed OS and use it on my testbed only. This is a personal decision and I'm not dissing 7, these are just my opinions.

I've been using 7 from RC 7100 (I even purchased 7600 about a week after the release) and to tell you the truth I love 7. It's beautiful and feature packed, but it's no match for XP as far as what I want in an OS.

I want ease of use, familiarity, dependablity.....

I know I'm opening myself wide up for vicious attacks here but here I am; cut my heart out.

Seven is about (in my estimate) a year away from proper driver support and technical fixes. My Hybrid sleep won't work despite all the latest drivers. It's wonky with any type of multiple hard drive configuration. Why on earth does 7 need to write to the boot sector of all HD's on a system, even just storage drives, and USB Drives. What a stinking mess this makes. It leaves a system with no versatility what-so-ever!:shock::mad2:

Programs that run flawlessly on XP either won't run on 7 or take a "geek of the year finalist" to get them to run; Crysis...:huh:

Games, at least on my system, (and mine is, while not an i7, pretty high in performance) run about 20% slower, with studer.(d)

In my opinion RC 7100 was better than the RTM.

My scanner is not compatible with 7. This wouldn't be such a big deal if 7 wouldn't totally invade my other hard drives. It's as though 7 lives and the longer it mingles with other HD's the more it owns them. Eerie:devil::devil:

Even Linux distros aren't as pervasive.

I have eight computers in use at my house. One with Vista running solid. Seven with XP Pro running solid. I also have a testbed built into a workbench in my basement that I use for computer repair troubleshooting. I have multiple HD's with different OS. I will run my 7 from this unit so I can become more familiar with the OS and try to determine when it is mature enough for me to use as my main OS.:sarc:

So, in a nutshell; Windows 7 is not something I'll use for some time to come.

I repair computers as a side job. No storefront or anything like that but I have about forty customers. For those that have asked if they need to upgrade to 7 I tell them no. Honestly they will receive no benefit from upgrading. We're talking people who surf the web, face book, email... I tell them to wait till it's time for them to buy a new computer and it will be preloaded with 7. What on earth is the sense for them to spend $150.00+ for a new OS on old hardware that will most likely be problematic because of the hardware?????

I know this post will be ripped to shreds and I'll be staked to an anthill, covered with corn syrup and left to die an agonizing death. So I offer myself to you to stomp on...:roflmao::devil2:

But I would like to know if there are any others out there that have gone back to a previous version of Windows after using 7 for a while and what your reasons are.

And come on, those of you in love with 7 no matter what comes your way; let the people who have switched back tell their stories and direct your hate towards me. I'm not scared, bring it on!

Obviously diff-runt monitors

The new computer resolution is set to 1360 x 768 - which is even higher than that on my old XP computer - so the screen SHOULD be even crisper! But as I say, OpenOffice and Quicken screens show soft-focus. Firefox, Thunderbird and Google screens are all crisp, so I know it's not just a cruddy monitor!

If it is that program specific, is sounds like those programs may be being "smart" and doing their own screen AA, which NO windows program should be doing at this point (not for actual text out).

Quicken surprises me but maybe OO has a feature to turn off font anti-aliasing. Should be off and just let Windows do what's right for your monitor.

I agree with you 100%, I love the simplicity of the XP.
I have two laptops, both I have upgraded it to the Windows 7. The older one, I bought a pre sale offer and the other qualified to windows 7 upgrade by Toshiba. I had the older one upgraded by a computer repair store and the newer one I have upgraded it myself. Upgrading is very cumbersome and a lot of hassle. Windows 7 is very unstable text sizes varies from site to site even though it was set to the default and overlapping. The media player can't play all my files. its very regretable.

1360 x 768 is a weird aspect ratio (= 1.77 ???) .. and I doubt that it matches your monitor.
If the attached Perfect Circle/Square doesn't look as such ....
then the setting aspect ratio doesn't match your monitor.

I'm thinking you need to be looking for a driver update.

SIgh, 1.77 is the TV widescreen aspect ratio

It likely means that a "tv mode" LCD is being used on the laptop.

More and more machines are being sold with "TV monitor screens" as they are a lot cheaper, not only do they have less pixels per "size" but they generaly have worse color fidelity as well, cheaper dacs etc. So the computer usage suffers so the video output can look good?

[Edit] I should say that it's only an indicator not an absolute, but I do look for "normal" computer montor sizes when shopping for LCD screens to avoid the low quality tv lcds.[/edit]
