router remote admin through verizon dsl modem

im trying to setup for accessing my external router via remote admin port 8080 which has to jump through the verizon dsl modem

this is what i have
modem - set to static
192.168.1.2
255.255.255.0
dhcp off
port forwarding 8080 to 192.168.1.20

external router
lan 192.168.1.254
wan 192.168.1.20 (static)
255.255.255.0
dhcp on
remote admin port 8080

then i try http://myip:8080 and it wont connect.
why wont it connect? do i need to add another rule on the router to port forward?

Hello,

Your LAN and WAN address are in the same IP Range. I think that this will cause problems with routing.

First backup your router and modem configs.

Change the modem IP address to 192.168.0.1 and change the routers WAN address to 192.168.0.254.

Change the Port forward rule on the modem as required for the new IP address and make sure that remote management is enabled on the router (port 8080). Another way to do it would be to create a DMZ to the router so that all port forwarding is done there.

yeah, i thought it would be a problem too, but it doesnt seem to be affecting anything else. i have my gateway (router lan ip) set as 192.168.1.254, and i have the dhcp leases set to something other than 192.168.1.1, and the modem is plugged into the wan port, which is treated in isolation from the lan.

also i have set it to dmz but the modem appears be be disfunctional because it will only set to DMZ under certain conditions, if i hvae a network adapter connected directly to modem for example. or if i have modem plugged into lan port instead maybe? but with it in the wan port, i dont think the modem is able to treat it the same and cant seem to DMZ it.

what about the other option in this modem, Static NAT? should i explore that? i dont want to blindly explore is, since its a pain in the arse to keep resetting the routers. it will let me manually speficy an IP, and i was considering trying my router ip in there.

Also i wanted to set up the modem in bridge mode, but when i do (not knowing exdactly teh proper settings) i cant seem to get past the username and password requited for PPoE.

i have port forwarding set up to handle ssh, and remote desktop those are working fine, this is because i set port forwarding in the edge router (the linksys were talking about gaining remote admin acces to) to the ssh and the RDC. but since thsi port 8080 needs to be forwarded to itself i even tried to forward it to itself.

as far as port forwarding on the modem, i have all the ports i use forwarded to the wan ip of the router which is generaly static

note i have dhcp turned off on the modem, i have tried both way so this is not the problem. but anyway its static, so when i port foerward through the modem to teh static router wan, this guarantees that the forwarding rules will always be in effect.

i also get various results when i check for open ports via the internet, usualyl it will say port 22 is open for ssh and port 3389 is open for rdc, but not always, but it will not say port 8080 is open, even though its stil forwarded teh same way in teh dsl modem. This means theres nothing on the other end of that port channel answering.

SO if i have 8080 directly forwarded, i wonder why it cant find its way into the wan port of the router, or why the router wont answer, or maybe the router just cant send the signal back out.

Hello again,

Is there any reason why you aren't just using a modem router?

If you plug your laptop into the WAN port on the router are you able to access the Routers Web interface? This will rule out the router blocking the connection.

I still think that there will be problems with the WAN and LAN being in the same range? I think its worth changing either the WAN IP on the Router and the Modems IP or the LAN IP on the Router?
