S.O.S. - Really annoying problem

Hi all,

I was trying to install a game (COD 2), when that little window that comes up when you're about to run an executable program or software from a disk came up. This is the main problem; I don't know what that window is called.

It usually gives you two options: run setup.exe, or open folder to view files. It came up for COD 2, and for some reason this time, i clicked the option for "always do this for games and software" so that I'd never see that window again.

ಠ_ಠ

Of course, COD 2 blew my computer up without even getting to the first install scren, 'cause it's old, and then I looked online for a solution, and found one - you have to click the 'open folder to view files' option in that initial window and run the .exe file from there. Of course now I can't do that because I canceled out that window with the option to do it. Now it just goes straight to the error message and my computer freaks out.

If somebody on here could just help me out with some info on how to restore that option window, that would be great. Not only would I then be able to enjoy COD2, I'm sure there are countless other situations in which that window would prove useful.

Thanks.

It's unable to perform the operation due to errors on the hard disk. It advises a disk error check, which sounds great.

Only for the one option: "Automatically fix file system errors," it fails at the start because it can't perform the operation while the disk is in use. If I try to schedule the scan for the next time I boot up the computer, it's like it just forgets and doesn't do it.

As for the second option: "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors," it starts this one, gets nearly 1/5 of the way through, and then abruptly stops and tells me to run the first option, which I can't do.

And I just noticed that right now my hard drive is active for no reason at all. Like, constantly. Ugh. What could the COD 2 disk have done? Ohp. It just stopped.

Try this next if what you did didn't work. No disk needed. Run up to three times I was told before.
My understanding if it says it couldn't fix window comes up run it again because it probably fixed some of it but couldn't finish on one run.
Once doesn't always catch all the errors.
Sort of like defragging it takes multiple passes but defrag keeps going until done.
Scannow does a single pass.

Just in case we miss each other.
If scannow didn't work then I would suggest a repair install.
You will need your Win 7 disk.

The first four boxes in the tutorial explain what will be reset and that you shouldn't lose anything else.
Read them so you are aware of specifics.
Read and follow tutorial carefully. Twice if necessary.;):D

Yeah I think the scannow did what it was meant to do, in that it performed and completed the scan, but it didn't repair the problems it found. So I think I'm just gonna shoot for the repair install.

I'll let you know if my house blows up.

Thanks again.

You just need to change the autoplay settings. Hit start and type autoplay and click on it. Just hit reset at the bottom, or change the option manually.

wscuraiii is talking about the 'Autoplay' option in the right click menu. Right click the drive with the COD DVD and click 'Autoplay'.
