Hello and thank you in advance for your help!

I bought a new Samsung 850 EVO 250GB for my old aging computer and this happened:

1. Cloned my old c: drive to the ssd, replaced it and everything went fine for a while until i started getting an infinite loop.
Windows wouldn't boot. Did a registry recovery via command line but my windows installation went to hell to forcing me to reinstall.

2. From this point everything went to hell, and after multiple windows reinstalls here's some of what happens:
- Windows installs but errors immediately follows;
- Some windows updates install but eventually start failing until windows update fails completely;
- Windows installs, updates install but eventually windows fails to load and enters repair mode claiming startup errors;
- Programs stop working for no apparent reason, some examples: Browsers won't run, file associations disappear (class registration errors), explorer;
- Driver problems with peripherals,
- File system corruption errors;
- I got situations where the computer would get stuck in a reboot/system restore/repair loop
- Automatic and manual restore points disappear making it impossible to restore to an earlier time;
- Changing the sata mode to IDE instead of AHCI seems to solve some of these issues but eventually the system locks up, the hdd light stays on, and after a reset the ssd doesn’t get recognized at startup. I have to power off to get it back but it’s the same all over again.

3. If I install windows on my old drive everything works fine…

So can you guys help?
What do you think? Defective SSD or incompatibility with my hardware?

I’m really at a lost here and could use some help…

Thanks

Unfortunately I've done multiple clean installs... doesn't seem to help.
Thanks!

Hi, looking at Asus web site - https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5Q_PRO/ is this the MOBO that you have?
Few things:
- it has not been recommended to clone W7 HDD to SSD
- SSD Windows7 install should be AHCI, this should be set in BIOS before installing Windows - reinstall is required if altered.
- if it's correct MOBO, according to specs it has 6 + 2 SATA II ports, try different ports/ SATA cable (reinstall of Windows is not required)

This is the right one:
Motherboards | P5Q | ASUS Global

I've tried fresh Windows7 install with sata in AHCI and all hell breakes loose.
As I've said, in IDE mode I don't get the mayhem of errors but the system does lockup, the hdd light stays on, and after a reset the ssd doesn’t get recognized at startup. I have to power off to get it back but it’s the same all over again. Also this happens at diferent times and situations after windows loads and seems to be random.

I've tried different sata ports but that has no effect whatsoever.

I have been using the same SATA cable though... could that be it? I mean c'mon...

Hi, safest is proses of elimination is:
1 - SATA cable
2 - Different Windows install media (perhaps the installer you are using is corrupted)
3 - Different computer
4 - If you still have problems with SSD contact Samsung support - they will advise you further.
