Sata 6gb/s compatible with my HD?

I'm thinking about purchasing a new motherboard & processor to upgrade my old Dell stuff. this is the motherboard: Newegg.com - MSI H67MA-E35 (B3) LGA 1155 Intel H67 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Is this compatible with a regular ole SATA hard drive? I notice it says SATA 6b/s. will i haev to buy a new hd and dvd drive or what?

Hello Arv3n,

No, you will not need to buy a new HDD. Any SATA HDD is compatible with the SATA 6 Gb/s port on the motherboard. That motherboard has 4 SATA 3 Gb/s ports and 2 SATA 6 Gb/s ports on it.

SATA is SATA is SATA. The drive will work fine, but it will run at the slowest point of the two. For example, if the board is 6 Gbps and the drive is 3...it will run at 3. If the board is 3 Gbps and the drive is 6...it will still run at 3.

A 6GB port is an overkill for any HDD - but it works. If you are lucky. the HDD can feed it at 1GB/sec. Those boards are made in anticipation of fast SSDs. But even Gen3 SSDs do not feed at 6GB though they are getting closer.
