Sata driver difference between Win7 pro and Win 7 Enterprise?

Hi everyone,

a few days ago, my teacher at school informed our class that Microsoft would be providing us with some of their software for academic purposes. Among this list of software, was Windows 7 Professional. So I decided I would install the 64 bit version of Windows 7. Now usually, I would have no problem installing an operating system, but this time around I decided I would install the operating system on my new seagate barracuda hdd (Model ST31000528AS).

After physically installing this new hdd, I booted up and noticed that my bios had detected this new hdd (the only one installed). I booted into gparted (using gparted cd), and created two partitions:

100 gb primary partition ntfs
900 gb primary partition ntfs

I then restarted, and booted from the win 7 pro 64 bit dvd (iso source: directly from MSDNAA Software Center and burned using imgburn). After specifying the language settings of the os, I clicked next, and waited to begin the installation. I waited about 15 minutes before the setup notified me that it could not find any hard drives to install on.

This prompt allows me to browse to a directory to specify a driver to help me detect this hard drive. I have tried the following drivers so far with no success:

Beta driver v1.0.14.0 of Siliconimage 3114 for Windows Vista 64bit.
nForce4/500 Series AMD - Windows Vista x64

At this point, I figured there was something wrong with the iso. So I tried installing Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit. To my surprise, this installation never prompted me for any additional drivers, and successfully installed onto my sata hdd.

So I decided to try to install win7 pro 64bit from a usb key. This would help me rule out that my optical drive was at fault. I booted from this usb key and setup ran as usual. Except, once again, it asked me for drivers to help detect my sata hdd.

I have searched this forum, and many many other forums to look for a solution, but I still have no success.

what might cause the problem:

install from usb
bios settings are not properly set
optical drive causes problem
wrong sata driver
corrupted iso

I'm wondering if anyone is familiar with this situation.

Since the Windows 7 install disk is one you burned yourself it may be a bad burn and needs to be done again, if so this would be the first thing to try.

Use the free ISO burner at the link below to burn another at a speed of now more than 4x and select to let the program to verify the disk before it finishes.

Thanks for the welcome and tip. I used imgburn to successfully burn/verify the

Windows 7 Professional (x64) - DVD (English) iso.

Unfortunetly I still ran into the same error:

A required cd/dvd drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, cd, dvd, or usb flash drive, please insert it now.

Note: If the Windows installation media is in the cd/dvd drive, you can safely remove it for this step.

I've tried also installing from a usb key, but I still get the same exact error.

Btw, sorry I didn't post my specs earlier, here they are:

Asus A8N-SLI DELUXE BIOS REVISION 1805
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+
Installed memory: 4,194,304k

Primary IDE Master: LITE-ON DVDRW LH-20A1P KL02
Fourth SATA Master: ST31000528AS CC38

At the moment I am re-downloading the iso from the same MS source that I had downloaded from before. I'm starting to run out of ideas, but I'm really stubborn to get this working. The way I see it, it won't be the last time I install an os on a sata hd, so I might as well get used to it now.

It is possible the first ISO was/is bad, especially from "University" links, it does happen.


Burn that with ImgBurn and give it a go and let us know how it goes.


You should have no issues at all using SATA, that's all I ever use and have had no issues, ever.

I'll add another tip...one I'm not sure why people ignore, adding more work for themselves. There's no need or reason to create partitions before running the installer. This just adds extra time and steps. For best results, leave the drive blank and use the installer to create your partition. Then install, and add your D drive once you get the OS up and running.

As soon as I finished downloading the iso I saw the difference.

The previous iso had been 2.01 GB. The same iso from the same source is now 3gb.

I successfully burnt/verified this iso with imgburn at 2x, booted from the dvd into windows setup and successfully installed windows 7 without any additional drivers.

In the future I'll definetly start by eliminating the simple elements of the problem.

Thanks also to DeaconFrost for the tip. I've been working with gparted to setup dual booting (win7, ubuntu) and triple booting (win7, ubuntu, fedora) in one of my unix classes. I should practice on resorting to logic when working, or it'll catch up to me.
