Solved SATA HDD and Samnsung SSD Unable to Format in Disk Management

Trying to help out my brother by installing a hard drive and SSD to his computer that he got for his birthday. Connected the SATA and power cables and the computer seems to recognize the drives (as in no connection issues) but doesn't give me the option to format them in disk management. Here's a screen shot:

You can see that the original drive is in the section where it lists the volume etc., which is where I need the other drives to be in order to be available to format afaik. The two drives installed (1TB SATA and 120GB SSD) are listed below as unallocated. I'm not sure if I missed an easy step or something is seriously wrong, but if anyone could help it'd be appreciate it!

Do you get an error message when you right click in that "unallocated space" on either new drive? What exactly happens? You get no menu whatsoever?

What do you intend to put on these drives? Data only? Operating system? You should disconnect that old 500 GB drive before putting an OS on the new drives--if that's your intent.

In the bottom portion of the window, did you right click the drives and select create new simple volume?

For now, I just want to get the drives working to hold data only. I eventually want to put the OS onto the SSD and off of the 500 GB drive that's installed and working, but doing that on a later date after I've resolved this issue is fine. Keeping the 500 GB drive on the machine though, the reason for installing the 1 TB is that one is the 500 GB is nearly full.

No I didn't, I wasn't aware that was a way to format and have been cautious about doing anything that I haven't been directed to from tutorials/guides. No websites have really gone into what those options mean. Should I do that?
