Save as / Attachment / issue

I've been harassed by a nagging problem ever since I started using Win7 x64 (about 2 years ago). I have no idea what could be the cause, and the problem is so varied that I haven't been able to find any solution. I hope someone among you can help me!

The problem:
I have several applications that give similar problems:
Word 2007: Cannot save a file (save as does not work, save usually does). Clicking on save as simply doesn't do anything.
Excel 2007: Same problem as Word
Outlook 2007: Cannot attach attachment file. I click on the paperclip, simply nothing happens.
FireFox 4.0.1: Saving a file does not work. When I right-click to download a file (or left-click if that is an option), there is no popup asking me where to save the file. When the link is to an immediate download, nothing happens either. I've had this FF issue since at least 3.5.

All of these problems I can solve by closing the application and restarting it. But I leave my applications open for long periods of time (a week is no exception).

The FF issue has been around the longest (or I've noticed it first), and I have tried resolving it by disabling all of the addons. To no avail.

Since these problems seem related to me somehow, I'm wondering if it isn't a memory leak kind of problem or something to do with Window's explorer.exe, but I don't know if that's true or how to troubleshoot it.

I hope you can help me, it's very irritating when you've typed a whole document and cannot save it, or when I have to close FF with 30 tabs open just because I need to save a file (I usually work around it by opening Chrome and going to the same URL, but it's a drag).

Anyone?
Thanks very much for you effort!

Ran Office diagnostics

Hi Irene,

thank you!

I've run the Diagnostics. It showed one error repaired, but no details on what exactly. I'll have to wait and see for a few days now whether the problem has been repaired or not. I'll post back the results!

Not solved

The last days, the problem has been popping up again, so the diagnostics haven't resolved the problem. @Irene, do you have any other ideas?

I found out there is more amiss when I tried to install SP1. It won't. Microsoft has a brilliant solution for this: re-install Windows. I'm hoping to find a solution where I don't have to kill an ant with a machine gun :-). Too bad, the error coding provided by MS is so generic (code 490 and something about files missing). Ofcourse I can live without installing SP1, but as a former systems administrator, this doesn't feel right.:)
