Solved Save As dialog -- File Name input box shows a combobox style list

How do I eliminate the annoying combo box drop down when I start to type a new file name I want to save?
- as soon as I type "C:\" a list of 20 previously saved files drops down,
(or on my laptop, unfurls UP covering the entire folder tree.
Applies to TXT files I am trying to save.

Because Win7 does not remember the last folder saved-to, I always have "Explorer++" open to copy the same folder path to the "Save As" dialog -- paste into "File Name".
As soon as I add "\" to the folder string the list of past folders and files opens-down/up

In XP this was disabled by adding a new registry entry to ...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\comdlg32
Name:= NoFileMru
Type:= REG_DWORD
Value:= 1

How do I do this in Windows 7 Home?

Metapad -- anything is better than Notepad
ClipX -- clipboard tool
Explorer++ -- leaves native Windows Explorer for dead
Classic Shell -- start menu
FileSearchEX -- I have hundreds of TXT files, native Windows Explorer cannot search "contents"

rebooted
shut-down
restart

Does not do anything for me.

New Toshiba with Win7 Home (Toshiba rebuild) 32bit
single user -- not exposed to web yet
Classic Shell Start (menu) installed

I have tried so many fixes that did not work + undone them.
Am getting desparate after 3 days of searching the web.

As single user I have modified the registry manually as "Owner" not "Administrator"
(All this Win7 "Security" is driving me crazy and is over kill for a single user PC)

I have already deleted two reg-items at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32
ie, "LastVisitedPidlMRU" and "OpenSavePidlMRU
- but they are both auto recreated by Windows and the SaveAs dialog "FileName" combobox refills again

- I have installed "Classic Shell" start menu -- would that be sabotaging my actions?

In WinXP I was able to disable the Combo dropdown button completely, (appears as a "Textbox")
Can that be done in Win7 ?

It's normal for those registry values to be recreated automatically as you repopulate the recently opened items.

Does it not clear them in all these type of windows, or just certain ones?

As a test, restore your default settings from Classic Shell, then uninstall Classic Shell, then try the .reg file again to see if Classic Shell may have been interfering somehow.

Hi Brink
Yes the REG changes do clear the "SaveAs" > FileName dropdown
BUT they do not "Disable" the drop down
In WinXP the "SaveAs" FileName can be tweaked to behave as a "textbox", rendering recent-files list as pointless



Is this possible in Win7 ?

WinXp can be tweaked to change the dropdown to an edit box

Using step 2 in OPTION ONE of the tutorial below should disable the recent drop down in common dialog boxes for you.

In addition, use step 2 in OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to turn them off in Windows Explorer windows.

was the solution.

I have been coming to terms with Win7 (after WinXP) -- security, Admin and owner -- are all new to me.

I have applied changes (manually) in the Win7 Registry, as owner.
ie, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Comdlg32

Should I instead apply it as administrator, and what hive-path would that be?

You would just need to be logged into an administrator account to be able to edit those registry entries.

If you like the .reg files are safe and will do it all for you automatically.
