I had posted a question about this a while back, but have something else. I dropped my DVD and there is a noticeable scratch. I copied the DVD on to another disk and did not get an error message. I still am not conviced the scratch is not a problem. I would really like to know, Is there any way to determine if the disk is still good without reinstalling Windows and finding out the hard way? Thanks,

The only thing that I can think of is to use a burning program like Nero, and have it validate the burn.

I have to agree with the Meister :) or you could try Imgburn if you don't have Nero which is free and in my opinion quite excellent :)

I have ImgBurn, but am unfamiliar with the term "Validate the Burn"? How is this done?

You just try to copy the contents to a folder, if there would have been any problem, it would not have any problem, it will not copy all the files ad will give you an error of " cannot copy the file, cannot find the path specified or anything else. Take my suggestion, you are safe, take care....

I use a Magnum.
Is the scratch deep? Just one scratch? I would use to drop all my CDs on the floor and let them roll around there for days before picking them up. You should see the gazillion tiny little scratches that it kind makes the CD a bit greyish than shiny and it still works.

*reason I don't bother: lazy to put them back so I just stack them on floor

I burned an ISO of the Win7 DVD and it appeared to copy OK. I then made a new DVD just in case one day I have to reinstall. Hopefully that won't be until I build the 64 bit machine that is on my "Bucket List" and install Windows 8. == Thanks for everyone's help.

There was a time when I was like that, but have reformed somewhat, because I think that there must have been a change either in the media or the optical drives, because I have had instances when a single scratch that was light did cause problems, and as luck would have it, it would be on an expensive piece of software that I didn't have backed up.

I have tried various ways to attempt to repair such disk, but not with any consistent luck, but have never tried Brasso before, so I will check that out.

The library in my area has a special CD/DVD refinishing machine. They use it in their media services department to clean them up after it has been checked out 50 times. Makes the DVD look like new. Go to your local library or media center and see if they have one of those machines and ask them to clean and remove scratches for you. Here they will do one CD/DVD per month for free.

You may have done this, but image the disc as .iso and then burn it back to DVD - easy.
