Screen freeze

I found these instructions on MS TechNet (same errors):

this issue may occur if third party program or device driver affects the network connection.

To troubleshoot this issue, please perform the following steps:

First, please download the network card driver from manufactuer's website.

Reinstall driver
==============
1. Click the Start Button, type "devmgmt.msc" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box and press Enter.
2. Double click to expand "Network adaptors".
3. Right click your network card and click Uninstall.
4. Check "Delete driver software for this device" check box, click OK.
5. Restart the computer

If Windows 7 will not install built-in drivers, please install the downloaded one.

If it does not work, please test it in Clean Boot mode.

jacee, I did as you instructed but Windows will still not start up in normal mode, only in safe mode. I uninstalled and deleted the driver for the network adaptor card and rebooted (in safe mode) and the driver was re-installed and it was stated that it was the latest driver for the device.

Webplodder, I am going to be off line for a few hours. I have some things I have to do. I will be back this evening. Someone else may pick this up and I hope they do. If not, I will "see" you this evening.

OK, thanks for you help Carl.

Were any of the red items related to your video card?
Does everything look fine in Device Manager?

I would bet its a video issue... just a thought: There are many manufacturers making Nvidia cards, who made your GeForce 8400 GS ??? What driver are you currently running for it, and where did you get it?

I can't see anything that relates to my video card but there are many events listed and I'm no expert.

My driver is Realtek RT L8 168D/8111D, I think! It's provided by Microsoft.

OK, what I've tried is this:

I downloaded a utility program I've paid for and used before called 'Driver Detective' which is designed to find any outdated drivers on your system. It did find that my network adaptor driver was out of date and I was able to download a more up to date driver using the same utility. All seems ok at present but I will have to see if this actually provides the solution. I will get back to you and let you know if I still have problems but I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to offer their very constructive suggestions. I am very impressed by this community and no doubt will come here again and again and would certainly recommend it to anyone.

Thanks again.

Hello !!

I think you have the problem rite there !!! Please don't use Windows Update to download drivers it usually never pick the best drivers or check whether it's a good a bad one. Its best to download the drivers directly from vendor's website.

Run the http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-lockup-debug-how/66913-sf-diagnostic-tool.html make sure you download SF Diagnostic Tool v2.0 and run it. Post us the results we might be able to find something.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for asking Carl.

Things seem to be OK at the moment Carl, although it's only been a couple of days or so.

BTW, When I ran 'Driver Detective' it found that my network adaptor drivers were out of date so I downloaded the newer ones via a zip file but I could not seem to install them and then I realized I'm not on a network so probably do not have a netwaork adaptor installed. Would this be the reason they would not install?

Hi pebbly.

Ok, of course you are right since it is listed in the device manager.

Well, I used the utility 'Driver Detective' to download the driver to WinZip (which I have paid for) but the little button that you use to install programs does not seem to be active in this case and I can't find any .exe file to initiate an install in the unzipped file.
