For the last 2 months I will be working on something and all of a sudden the screen goes black, it goes into safe mode and It restarts normally. Last night it did the same thing but screen stayed black too long so I did a shutdown and restarted.. message said it didn't restart was going to look for a way to fix it. Then I got the notice about 7 being unsupported in Jan. Is this part of Windows way to get you to change over to 10 before January? Will we have to buy a new version of Windows 10? Anyone know?

Thanks!

There are many discussions on what to do after January 2020 when M$ will end Win 7 support.
Win 7 will work the same way it does today. Only change is that M$ will not install reminders of how good Win 10 is.
You can update your Win 7 to 10. Download Win 10 and run setup from running windows or do a fresh install and when asked for the key, put on the win 7 COA key.

I'm downloading all kind of offline updates. For now, Simplix, is the best option. Is a single update file (700M) that has all updates but the tracking ones.

Now, for your problem. It may be that your disk is dying. First thing to do is to run check disk. Pay attention on the results, specially bad blocks or bad clusters.

If you can boot into Windows, open Explorer, right click on the C: drive - properties - Tools Tab - Error Check - Check now.
It will say the disk is in use and if you want to schedule to next boot = Yes
Reboot and it will launch check disk. Pay attention on the results, specially bad blocks or bad clusters.

Thanks so much. Will get hubby on it right away. So far he has tried to run McCaffe. It wasn't installed properly, so he took it off, reinstalled and is now running a full scan. My download speed was 37mega bits per second. slow
He will do what you suggested after scan completes.

Does the black screen come up and you go to Safe Mode or are you stuck at the black screen? == Can you get into Windows at all? == It sounds to me like it could be a heat problem. If you can get to Windows, you can download and install Speccy - Standard If the CPU temperature is much over 50° C, that is your problem.

Had to reinstall McAfee and run full scan. Started it at 4pm yesterday. it is only at 58% scanned and 12,975,769 files scanned. It is now 10 a.m. here. It keeps moving but GOOD GRIEF at this rate it won't be done till tomorrow. It is 1GB hard drive So In have not been able to try the suggestions I got yet.

Honestly, I would stop it. If it hasn't found anything in the first few thousand files, then there probably aren't any problems. After you stop it, it might report what it found and fixed. Don't use it so I can't verify that.

After that, you could run the disk check.

How much free space is on your C: drive?

Well it found 3 problems in the first few hours and "corrected" them. No mention what they were. Now at 74%. No new problems.

Can I run check disk while it is scanning so slowly??? And check C Drive free space???

Okay, I have 737 GB free of 916GB so I have lots of room left

O.K. I tried.right click on the C: drive - properties - Tools Tab - Error Check - Check now.
It will say the disk is in use and if you want to schedule to next boot = Yes

THEN: Windows can't check the disk while in use. Do you want to check for hard drive errors the next time you start the computer? choices were : Schedule disk check OR cancel

I can''t shut down the McAfee at this point. My husband wants to let it run. What exactly will happen if my disk is dying?? I can't lose everything on my computer. Thanks for sticking with me on this.

Windows can't check the disk while in use. Do you want to check for hard drive errors the next time you start the computer? so I check o.k. Back to the desktop.

If your disk dies, ie does not work anymore, you lose everything. == This will not help you now but when your PC is working, you must do this to have a backup of your files so you will not lose everything again. It is easy once you get it installed. == Go to Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free and download the free file to your C: drive and install. Then get a large hard drive to save nothing but your backups. I have installed that drive in my PC. Others like more security and keep that drive away from their PC. Both ways are fine. Since mine is in my PC, I have it set to automatically backup every Saturday night. If you had that now you could take 15 minutes, backup and things are like they were before. == This will stop this problem in the future. As for now, I hope the guys here get you going. Good Luck

After you checked o.k you must reboot.
After the Win logo it will begin the C: check disk.

I turned the computer on this a.m. and it started to scan. It finished and I saw no report. It just went back to the desktop. Any way to retrieve the report?

Downloaded the Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free bigmik suggested. installed it. Ready to roll but the Seagate backup hard drive which has a terabyte on it was half full of old stuff so we are deleting items. Just Deleting Norton is taking HOURS we don'rt use it anymore. So if all goes well we will back up my Drives. Don't know how that will solve my black screen problem though.

Hubby thinks I need a new tower...could you look at these and tell me what you think? I am no a gamner, mostly graphics and pictures.

Don't mean to be stupid, but why would a Monitor have those settings? How would I know???

Just checked the scan still chugging along. Almost to 12 hours.
THANKS SO MUCH, i downloaded the
seeing chkdsk results - Microsoft Community and will try to run it but am afraid if I look for it while the N360 is being deleted I may get the dreaded Black Screen.

So glad I have a laptop too. I would go crazy if I could not use my computer and get online.

I use a ViewSonic monitor. I can press on a button under the front bezel and it comes up with all kinds of settings options. One of them is Memory Recall that, in essence, sets the monitor to the defaults. Your system specs say you have a PC/Desktop so I assume you have a separate monitor. Don't you have any documentation for your monitor or a software installation disc?

The link I gave you only tells you how to find the log. There's nothing to run.

Are you trying to uninstall Norton 360 at the same time you're trying to run chkdsk?

I was able to do these things

To see the Chkdsk log follow these steps:

Open The Event Log...
Control Panel (Classic View) -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer (3rd choice)

The ChkDsk Log is found in....
Windows Logs (2nd choice on left) -> Application (1st sub-choice) Found it

NONE OF THESE THINGS SHOWED... no times, no Wininit.

< NOTE >
This will display a number of information logs in the center pane, many of them from the most recent Windows startup. You will notice the 1-2 hour time difference in events if you rebooted to scan (time spend runnign chkdsk). This should help you identify the startup events after the scan...

About half way down the list of logs, look for the item Wininit in the source column. This will contain the log data for the ChkDsk scan prior to the boot.

Still trying to remove N360. Hubby shut off. It is all still there. I tried to delete again. nothing.

SO..... looked at the date. It is way older than I thought. 2008...11 years old.

The monitor a Dell, no buttons on bottom. 4 buttons on front. What am I looking for.

WAIT!!WAIT!! I found a choice for FACTORY RESET or Reset Menu....will this take care of my black screen problem????
