Hi

I have this problem where my screeen will turn black or turn off after a short while of playing games. I installed Windows 7 recently and then installed Borderlands and COD4. Both games run fine at lowest settings but after about 15-20 minutes of playing, my screen would just turn off and I'd have to switch the laptop off using the power button to reboot.

I'm not sure if this is a Windows 7 problem, graphic card issue, or heat related issue since my notebook fan is not working and i'm using a notebook cooler.

Sounds as though the gfx card maybe overheating, this would cause display shutdown. When i suffered this prob in past due to broken gfx card fan the time to black screen would shorten after initial shutdown because of the card already being hot

Take a bag of ice, and put it under your laptop. Alternatively, put a fan next to your laptop. This is definetly a over-heating issue. Probably the graphics card.

I am going to say with the other people it's overheating. If your running a dedicated graphix setup you can get programs to slightly lower the settings. I had mine OC'd during the RC's and it worked fine but for some reason (I suspect dust but am too lazy clean) it doesn't work well with the OC anymore. So I underclock using EVGA Percision and it works fine. It's probably the core/shader clocks that are either too high or just overheating as a mem overheat tends to give artifacts more. Either way you need to find a way to cool it down.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Pauly what you described is exactly what I'm experiencing. The time taken for the display to go off shortens each time i reboot. I'm going to send the laptop for repair soon.

Did you try the ice-thing? You dont necessarily have to send it to be repaired if you can change a fan yourself. Perhaps you can even try a liquid-hydrogen cooler :D

This definitely doesn't help,

heat related issue since my notebook fan is not working and i'm using a notebook cooler.

and if yours is one of those prone to this,

Dell, HP Lists Reveal Defective NVIDIA Mobile GPUs - InsideTech.com

HP Limited Warranty Service Enhancement (Product Numbers Included) HP Pavilion dv9000 CTO Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

Direct2Dell - Direct2Dell - DELL COMMUNITY

it really doesn't help. And unfortunately if yours is one of those it isn't covered by HP's extended warranty.
