Search in windows 7, can it be made like XP

Hi all.....I have a external HDD, 1 and a half TB, it has thousands of docs and photos, in XP I could search the whole drive for docs and it would find them all, if I typed in JPEG, every image would come up in thumbnail form and it would open every folder till the laptop ran out of memory.

now I have windows 7 I can find no way of finding all the images or docs.

sorry if this makes no sense.............is there anything I can do
