for those who are interested..........Maximum Security: 2010 Internet Security Suites - PCWorld

Nonetheless, we found some significant differences in just how well security suites protect your PC. We tested 13 suites in all. Norton Internet Security 2010 took the top ranking, owing to its strong overall malware detection. Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 was a close second. AVG Internet Security 9.0 placed third for its malware detection and speedy system performance. Closely following the top picks was a competitive middle tier of suites from Avast, BitDefender, McAfee, Panda, PC Tools, Trend Micro, and Webroot. The suites from Eset, F-Secure, and ZoneAlarm lagged, due to acceptable, but not great, malware protection.

For antimalware testing, PCWorld contracted the services of AV-Test.org, a respected security testing company. We looked not only at traditional signature-based detection but also at how well the suites cleaned infections, removed rootkits, and detected malware based on behavioral analysis.

Strange, I have had to uninstall both Norton and AVG due to them slowing my machines down horrendously. Norton only on occasions, but AVG seemed to keep my CPU spiked alot and thrashed my HD quite often. I guess there is a tradeoff, I would rather have better performance and just ne careful about what sites I visit, files I open.

Desslok, when is the last time you used Norton? The 2009 and 2010 versions are some of the lightest av programs around!

I bought my Netbook in December and it came bundled with Norton. After I noticed it hogging a lot of resources I uninstalled it and it was drastically faster. So I loaded AVGfree on it for some protection and that was worse than Norton. So I uninstalled that and loaded MSE, much better than teh other 2 I had.

I stopped using Norton years ago when they refused to fix the resource issue. Now they want to fix it after 10 years. I refuse to use their products on principal alone.

Sure I will test it on my test or virtual machines but it will never touch my main systems hard drive.

AVG has failed on 2 different computers I've been asked to fix due to serious infection

I have had to clean serious infections from machines with just about every security suite and anti-virus you can think of. It all comes down to who's sitting between the monitor and keyboard.

A careless or uninformed person can make the greatest security app useless. On the flip side you can have a careful and informed person run with the crappiest app and never have an issue.

Security suites are never gonna be bullet proof.
