Is much faster than a HDD, even if your SATA is not the latest standard.

Thank you and I wish the wind be at your back tale wings.

Frankly, solid state drives have crashed my business twice, after 1 and a half years use, and they went dead, but zowie they were fast And i am sorry, not to put you off, but I wanna just forget the whole thing right now.

OK folks
the tag on the side says XP professional with a long as heck product number,

is it OK to put that number in this thread, or is it a private user only number.

That long as heck number is most likely the Product Key. Never post the Product Key on a public forum.

Since you have created an image of your current drive, you should be able to restore that image onto your new hdd and not need to worry about drivers and such.

If you plan instead to freshly install the OS then you will need to obtain the OS install disk, determine the Win 7 Product Key and you will want to make sure you have all the drivers you will need on-hand when you setup the machine. You will also need to re-install all of your apps.

Hello Strollin and thank you for yours, no I have not pulled a image yet, and I do not have OM disk that it came with but thanks to many here I
got a ton of other customization's done and wow THANK YOU all.
Glad I had a hunch about that product key.
frankly i got very tiered of feeling was I was taking way to long to get info out to all you "All So Ready To Run With it Folks", so I found a program that dug into my mach for many details
plus i opened it up to photograph the hard drive but the flat desk top design had drive buried under a dvd-cd drive, but to help you all as much as you have me, I got the following
Factory stamp says it was made july 2007 (after the great MB capacitor scandal had been corrected)
Machine says WIN XP on side, so i guess joker who told me it was a newer machine lied.
but the mother board looked very healthy, no brown resistors, very clean, no Cigg smoke and very flat cap heads, and it did sit in a corner for 3 years never used, so it has some life
Any case here is what I got, which appears to be a ATA drive with a 7 OS dropped in.
I pray I can get a good Brand New ATA DRIVE :cry::cry: as i really wanted a sata.

In my experience an SSD is worthwhile on an older computer that supports only SATA2. I have 2 such. And theory explains why.

The performance of drives is often evaluated by comparing transfer rate. It is a single easily understood and easily compared number. People like that. But for an OS drive it really doesn't mean very much.

In a modern OS the typical usage pattern on the OS drive is many relatively small reads scattered over the drive. That applies even on a drive with zero fragmentation. That means the drive heads of a conventional drive are going to be moving a lot. This is a problem for conventional drives. That means the drive is going to be spending most of it's time moving the heads to where the data is and much less time actually reading it. Over the years the transfer rate of drives has risen dramatically. Head seek time has also shortened, but not nearly as much.

A SSD has no moving parts so seek time, if the term even has meaning, is so small it doesn't matter. For an OS drive an SSD will perform much better, even with only SATA2.

I have 2 SSD drives, the oldest nearly 5 years old, the other a little less. The oldest has been through a lot. It runs 24/7, has seen multiple OS installs and restores and many application installs. I have had no issues with the drives and neither has any SMART warnings. I have done nothing to reduce writes on either drive.

On the other hand, I have seen multiple failures of conventional drives.

Thank you Lmiller I am glad for your good experience, and wish it continues so for you.
But my boss is paying for this and he ant changing churches.
Some how this thread has become something VS Something, which i did truly try to avoid
until my questions got stalled there,
So Please
I wish truly to get back to my original goal now please.
Based on all I printed above about this xp turned into a OS 7, which is now acting funny, and needs to get changed out fast before funny gets me a blue screen or something---
Can some one please read the above posted DATA and tell me if
I can use a SATA hard drive?,
if yes, which one and what is best and who do you trust to buy it from

If no, and I must use a old IDE (I think there called) can I get a brand new one
if yes where,

As well I thought someone mentioned you can make a old xp IDE, and make it a sata workable
by doing something or other, is that easy for a non computer dim wit like me.
Thanks
j
PS despite anything above, there is no floppy disc insert on this machine.

The data you provided above does not really mention what the interface is BUT, I looked up the listed disk drive (WD800JD-75MSA3) and it is a SATA 2 drive.

I also found this TechSpecs chart that shows that all models of the 745 support SATA2 & SATA3 and, depending upon which model you have, have 1 to 4 SATA connectors. See here: https://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/optix/en/opti_745techspecs.pdf

The only real question is: Do you have the Minitower, Desktop, Small Form Factor or Ultra Small Form Factor model?

EDIT: I just noticed that SIW2 posted the link to the TechSpecs in post #5 a week ago.

Dear Strollin
I want to commend you on your resolve to complete this task,
this link below appears to describe the machine, with the exception mine has no floppy drive input in the front.
Skipping no small amount of details that have giving me a headache so bad I fear I am on the verge of driving up "Aspirin Stocks on the New York exchange" can you recommend a western company mechanical 1T (1 tara bit ?) drive i just could call new bee company I think there called, and just order by a part number, for a brand new drive, PS the guy who sold this said it was dual core,
when I asked what that meant he said with high volume mania in his voice "I told you its dual core that's what it means" I also noted his kids looked over whelmed with such life answers, and none the better for it. is this dual core a thing i need to understand better when ordering?
http://gosrock.com/my745/desktop.htm
and thank you again, your very dedicated to the cause

strollin[/B];3470084]I don't know anything about the new bee company but here is a Western Digital 1TB drive you should be able to order by the model number WD10EZEX. https://shop.westerndigital.com/products/internal-drives/wd-blue-desktop-sata-hdd#WD10EZEX

Whether the CPU in the computer is a dual core or not does not matter when selecting a hard drive.

Thank you for yours big time :-)
ERRATA--New Egg

So after I pull a image from old drive on to a 32 GB flash stick by way of USB port I just transfer image back to new drive?

1. You are certain they take the same connection harness or connection plug, I heard I may need a IDE adapter cause this was a XP machine moved up to seven before?
but your saying I may just unplug the old and put the new one in ?

2. Can you please recommend a Clean open wear Bug Free program to work the transfer image to flash drive from old hard drive part and on to the new of the process.

3. I am seeing wd10eztex blue for around $45.00, is there a longer lasting model for more $ as i see a "black" instead of blue brand, but no price, just says more expensive but better, is there a black version of the Blue sata -hdd#wd10ezex I can use that is brand new,

4. PS do you think i can buy a brand new mother board for this machine and down the road power pack too, as my XP repair guy sold me used (Mother boards) parts marked as new, which made me retire repairing it even tho it would have made a great movie / Juke box, run off line.

lastly I am seeing sata 1's, 2's, 3's Etc, does that affect me

thanks strollin

It seems that you are asking the same questions over and over. If you are that hesitant, why don't you just take the machine to a repair shop and have them do it?

Yes, there is a "black" edition of the 1TB drive: WD1003FZEX. It is more expensive but it offers better performance and a 5 year warranty while the "blue" edition is lower performance and comes with a 2 year warranty. You decide which you would prefer. For most users, the "blue" is adequate. I own and like both types.

According to the spec sheet for that machine, the 2 smaller models have both IDE (also called PATA) and SATA connectors. All 4 models of that machine support at least 1 SATA drive. So, yes, you should be able to unplug the old and plug in the new. XP didn't come from Microsoft with SATA drivers but you could manually install them so, just because it came originally with XP, doesn't mean it didn't come with a SATA drive. It might be possible that you have one of the 2 smaller machines (I believe you do) that came with both IDE and SATA but according to the tech sheet, the SATA connector was designated for the hard drive and the IDE was designated for the optical drive. If your machine currently does have an IDE hard drive, it would mean that you would plug the drive into a different connector. In that case, you may need a SATA data cable.

As far as imaging the old drive, I would look into the free version of Macrium Reflect. It should do what you want.

I personally would not consider putting a different motherboard in that machine.

The different SATA numbers correspond to higher transfer speed of the interface. Your machine supports SATA 3.0 and most likely the drive you buy will support SATA 6.0. However, the newer, faster versions are fully backward compatible so they will work fine but you won't get the full performance of the drive. You could try to find a SATA 3.0 drive to match but since it is an older type, it will probably be harder to find and be more expensive.

I personally would go with the WD "blue" drive for your machine unless you really want to have a 5 year warranty. Do you plan to use that machine for another 5 years?

Dear Strollin
I live in the middle of no frigging where, there are three computer repair places here run by cave creatures, I have dropped machines off at each one time, after being warned not to, all three incidents led to consumer nightmares beyond the scope of this thread, once i took in a working but fading machine, and it broke at their shop and it never turned on again, so I am shooting for a part number and an order to New Egg for a long lasting drive plus i am freshly up from a covid bed and my brains are gonna be mush for months so I don't wanna screw this up cause this is my mail contact to outside world and entertainment device.
Windows 8, -ten do not interest me at all.
As to a new mother board, my understanding is this board in there, was made after the big
"Bad Capacitor Scandal" dell and others were victim to, and this board is made very well in compensation to the bad scandal PR dell got, it was made in 06, so my idea was to buy a extra to have for a spare tire.
So in closure I can call Newbee and just order a-"black" edition of the 1TB drive: WD1003FZEX
(any sata 4 thru 6) but if I find a black sata 3 WD1003FZEX and the price is right I can go for it?
gotta go, think bears are getting in the trash again.

Thanks for yours
Jim in the wilderness

Dear Strollin

So in closure I can call Newbee and just order a-"black" edition of the 1TB drive: WD1003FZEX
(any sata 4 thru 6) but if I find a black sata 3 WD1003FZEX and the price is right I can go for it?
gotta go, think bears are getting in the trash again.

Thanks for yours
Jim in the wilderness

Well I guess every one who knows the answer to this question is out for a long over due martini or five at the victims of our own creation recovery bar or I blew someones fuse cause late in my dyslexic misty sleepy night posts i keep calling newegg store *** newbee:banghead:
So for the lone traveler who may come across this thread, and asks "why did i spend my time reading all this" what i did was to call a net computer store, gave em my comp model # and they are sending a new western black sata something WD1003FZEX and 2 transfer boxes to move data from one to the new other.
As such i am looking for the "sorta solved button" but can't find it.
in closure its a shame Bill Gates dumped such a UN-integrated device on the UN-intergrated.
good luck out there, get some sleep, burn candles and clear the room with air plain mode, your best app. and never break your heart trying to grow a plant next to the wi-fi modem.
**speaking of un integrated, if you order from newegg, they send you a different e-mail confirmation for each device you buy, so if you order 5 things you get 5 e-mails.

I'm just sayin :banghead:

I, for one, didn't realize there was a question still open since all of your questions were answered. Glad you finally climbed down off the fence and ordered something.

One thing I'm not sure about, what are the 2 transfer boxes that you ordered?

OK folks
the tag on the side says XP professional with a long as heck product number,

is it OK to put that number in this thread, or is it a private user only number.

I dont know about anyone else here, but, I have always had issues trying to run XP on any ssd. No trouble with 7 tho.
I would go with a black or blue WD 500

Hello strollin, I pray you are well. My tech guy had me order 2 wrong size transfer boxes, so we could not use them to transfer the image, and he then did it thru his computer, he transferred the image of my old os 7 drive to the new western 1 T hard drive, after install my machine would not recognize it, using ubuto OS off a flash drive it would come up, but i have not the time to waste leaning what ubuto is all about so the whole fix is stalled, after he played with it for 7 hours we got Zero Where which is what climbing off the fence before i had ground to stand on got me.

I've had several bad experiences with WD drives, more than one dead on arrival or took a dump within a year!

Don't purchase them, or recommend them!

thank you snick
I am afraid you maybe right, after reviewing my specks on these pages please tell me what you would recommend I install for a very long term worry free hard drive.

PS I was wondering why it was so cheap.
PSS I don't have a lot of money.

Well, Crucial a while back had a downloadable tool that scans your system and recommends compatible RAM, SSD's etc.
You don't necessarily have to buy/use Crucial, I have 3 SSD in my Desktop right now that are Crucial, I Samsung, can't say I see any difference in read/write speeds. Yea, tests show some difference, not really perceivable to me.

Crucial Advisor tool

Scroll down the lists and chose your make model, ect. click and boom there you go. Everything you need to choose RAM or SSDs

I find Crucial a reasonable price, reasonable performance product. Unless you are running a high end MOBO, Processor, etc, you don't need to buy a cadillac, it won't ride any better on an old system.

When I design and build servers, the last one had 5 cpus, & 15 SSDs. One CPU & SSD were dedicated cache servicing the others. I purchased expensive CPUs, and hot swapable commercial grade SSDs.

If you wish to use another drive, all is well. However, note the specs of the drive. Copy and Paste is good.
Then you can search the Net and find a drive that matches those specs. I always Google for reviews and read them, Good and Bad, then you can make an informed decision

The crucial tool is excellent & I use it rather frequently. Saves straining my old brain. LOL

Snick
