Separate OS and storage

I've always separate the two ie on C: would be my OS and any software I may have installed, on D: would be music, photos, movies, etc. It is said to help speed things up a bit. Is this true though?

Hi

only speeds thing up if they are on seperate drives. It does do something much more important. It keeps your data safe should your OS ever die.

The other question is this.
Is it one drive split into two parts c: & d:? then its the same as on drive.
Like Zig said it keeps your data safe if your OS goes bad but does not help if your drive dies.
But with how cheap SATA drives are now, get a small 150 gig for OS then a 500 gig for Data and make sure they are the 72000 RPM and 32meg cache and you will see a differences there data is safe from the OS and if the main drive bites the dust you still have your data.

I run my laptop with 2 parts so if the OS does go I have all my personal data and a copy of my OS on the 2nd partition, I then backup both parts on a USB drive. As for speed I see no difference but if it was 2 different drives then I would think accessing movies or music would be faster and it would also make the OS drive last longer as its not constantly reading when listening or watching.
