Services - Restore Default Services in Windows 7

How to Restore Default Services in Windows 7

   Information
This tutorial provides you with registry downloads that will completely restore any of the default services and their settings you want in Windows 7. This can be handy if a service was deleted by mistake, is missing, or had it's properties set improperly.

You must be logged in as an administrator to be able to do the steps in this tutorial.

   Note
Services are located in the registry location below.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services

   Warning
Do not add a service to a Windows 7 edition that the service was not available in by default. It will not work since it was never included in that edition.

If you did not delete a default service, then you might consider doing a full scan of your system at boot with a program like Windows Defender Offline to help make sure that your system is clean.

Here's How:1. Click on the Display Name link in the table below of the service that you would like to restore to download it's .reg file.

2. Save the .reg file to your desktop.

3. Right click on the downloaded .reg file and click on Merge.
NOTE: If you wish to see what changes will be made by the REG file, then you can right click on the extracted REG file and click on Edit to see the default registry entries that will be added. REG files are just text files. The "Edit" function just opens them in Notepad.

   Tip
If you do not see a Merge option when you right click on the REG file, then you will need to check in Default Programs to set the reg file extension to have it's Current Default program set as Registry Editor (C:\Windows\regedit.exe). Afterwards, try merging the REG file again.
4. If prompted, click on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK.

5. Repeat all of the above steps if you would like to restore another service.

6. When finished, restart the computer to apply.

7. When finished, you can delete the downloaded .reg file(s) on the desktop if you like

Couldn't hurt, but it may be best to clean install with that many of them messed up.

Is there a way to reset ALL of them at once with a single file? restoring ALL of these one by one would be a HUGE pain... That kind of seems a bit repetitive?

Hello Realflow,

You could do a system restore using a restore point dated before whatever happened to restore them to how they were at the date of the restore point.

Hope this helps, :)

Thanks for this Shawn :)
I have an issue getting sharing working on one computer, and i'll post in the networking thread.
I found this forum searching for GUI tweaks just a while back and had not thought i'd need help, as i am pretty careful and rely on restores and backups but it's for my dad's PC. He worked with computers since the day when "if you could SPELL computer you would be hired", but back then you'd have to insert a virus with punch cards i suppose ;)
Well i never thought i would be so delighted to have to fix a computer problem, but you and the others are inspirational! :grouphug:

Hello Realflow, :)

Usually if they are all messed up, it may be best to reinstall Windows.

If you like, you can compare your settings to the table in the tutorial to see if it's set to default or not. This way you would only need to change the settings for the ones that are not default.

I would like to have all of the restore services things in one runnable file to do all the services at once rather than reinstalling windows and losing hundreds of games thousands of photos and all my music. reinstalling windows isn't an option im willing to take. is there really no program tool or .bat / .vbs that will restore all the services to the defaults?

Hello realflow,

To be honest, if your services are that messed up where all of them need to be reset, then it would really be better to reinstall Windows.

You could also do a system restore using a restore point dated before your services got messed up to restore them to how they were at the time the restore point was created.

Realflow, with a proper install and configuration of Windows you shouldn't lose any games/pictures/or any other data whatsoever re-installing the OS. Moreover, proper imaging/backups ensure you don't clean reinstall, unless some very unfortunate event happens.

However, I wonder if I would be allowed to download all and create an all-in-one reg file and possibly attaching to a post if/when such drastic troubleshooting is required?

Would a Repair Install fix the problem with default Services while not loosing a lot of things?

Realflow, with a proper install and configuration of Windows you shouldn't lose any games/pictures/or any other data whatsoever re-installing the OS. Moreover, proper imaging/backups ensure you don't clean reinstall, unless some very unfortunate event happens.

However, I wonder if I would be allowed to download all and create an all-in-one reg file and possibly attaching to a post if/when such drastic troubleshooting is required?

Sure, you could if you like, but it's just not recommended when there's that many.

@ Brink

I have a question.

Would a Repair Install fix the problem with default Services while not loosing a lot of things?

It would, but since there isn't an ISO file available that is newer than a fully updated current installation, it would be impossible to do a repair install without one.

I understand.
Thank the good Lord I have Microsoft installation disc.

I forgot many don't. Microsoft has pretty much kicked the OEM/SLP people in the cherries.

Thanks for the clarification, I hope of course this stays theoretical but never know.
+1 for having the install disk, though mine is non-SP, so, glad I could at least download the SP version from software recovery :)

Restore Default Services in Windows 7

Hello, probably the most stupid question ever asked, but I cannot open this list ( on page one of this Tutorial ).:o

To find it I did Regedit and found HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Current control Set\Services, but then I am stuck with a long list in very small print and not your nice sheet ?

How can I open that ????

Thelma
