Set a restore point in Windows 7 gives these errors

Hello,

I have read the procedures to set a simple restore point in Win 7. Various errors are reported and I cannot proceed.

One is

"The Volume shadow copy of System Restore is not working"
(and gives an event long which I don't know how to find.

On the Properties box the option to Configure Restore Settings is greyed out and inactive.

An action on the Properties box says "Searching" but seems not to complete.

How can I set up to do Restore points in the normal manner familiar in Win XP?

I have not run chkdsk recently but I do that as part of my backup routine using Norton Ghost (an old version.)

Is there a repair routine needed?

We are talking about two different things possibly.

I merely wish to duplicate the restore point procedure available to Windows-- or not-- depending on what Win7 allows.

I understand a disk image restore to be something different. I use Norton to make whole clone only,
not shadowing or anything like it.

Windows normally has an option to set a restore point. That's what I want to get accomplished.

In the meantime I'll look at your link and see what is going on there.

Here's another thought. I just ran Malwarebytes and Comodo during system maintenance. One of them sets a restore point-- Malwarebytes I think as I saw the screen info.

Can a restore point for system be retrieved that way on Win7?

Sorry for the delay. I am not sure how far it is possible to retrieve the restore point but if you used Norton to clone the disk then you can restore it. This might be helpful for you recover System Restore points after disk cleanup - Microsoft Community

I see a new desktop method here and will try that.

Yesterday I used the task manager method where you select a period to do automatic restores.

Mine was set for midnight. I'll report back if it showed anything.

Why should something as simple as a restore point be turned into rocket science?

Has my old backup procedure using Norton something to do with it-- introducing changing something in config? I find that unlikely.

--> Would the Repair disk offer any solution?

As per various previous suggestions from other sources I ran the sfc scannow routine and that also turned up no problems.

Security in the form of virus checkers and system security is turned off. Recent runs of Comodo and Malwarebytes show no problems whatsoever.

Why are fresh commands to set the restore point issuing these errors?

Do you have Norton and Comodo installed?

nothing is installed. I took all the various security programs off. Win7 security is turned off too. I don't like being told I can't do this or that. It's gone and it makes no difference. Everything runs fine.

I skipped down to the last one about enable/disable. It says in there that system protect has to be turned on.

I believe mine is off (for the reason stated earlier-- I normally want no interference from the OS.)
To get this working I'll see if turning on system Protection stops the errors.

'Been running without a net for so long now I'd have to look up how to turn it back on.

This has been a help. It might be as easy as switching on that Protection mode.

Reading your post #1 again I wonder how you expected Restore Points to work when you turned it off.

I keep my Restore point storage to 5 % and that gives me more than enough Restore Points.

This is also handy in cmd. prompt to see your restore point.

I have looked at more of the samples.

And I've run around in circles enough. Remember where it said "Search with no completion"
at the System page you show above? That's where it ends with no possibility of correction.

Where your sample shows C: and D: or whatever, mine says "Searching...." for drive prompts and shows incomplete with no drives found to "Protect." I'm through chasing my tail on this.

The thread remains unsolved.

There's no Restore point possible because No drive found. Elsewhere on system everything is normal.
I just wanted the ability to set Restore in case of a problem.

I'm not really understanding your last post.

You are booted into (C) Windows 7. That is exactly where Restore Points are installed by Windows 7.

Did you try this and see what is there.

vssadmin list shadows

Over a period of about 7 days or when certain things are done on the computer Windows 7 will auto make Restore Points.

If you want to see Restore Points now you will need to create one.

Just go to Start Orb and type in Restore and you will see Create a Restore Point at the top.
Tick on it and it will guide you to creating a New Restore Point.
