Complaining that XP runs very old hardware better is pretty misplaced, imo. A computer that is over 3 or 4 years old is an antique already. After my machine gets to be 2 to 3 years old, I'm usually ready to upgrade and see what advances have been made in hardware. The important point is that 7 runs fantastic on moderate performance machines. It runs great on my 2 year old laptop. It doesn't seem important or impress me that XP might run better on an underpowered antique or use less ram, especially since ram is so cheap now. Jmo.

Win 7 for me......I use XP at work and I find it frustrating and not very intuitive in the way I work.....
Having anything up to 10 windows open at a time (combination of e-mail, excel, word and PDFs is a real pain...where when I do work from home the same scenario is much easier to use...to find what I need etc....and Windows 7 doesn't lag down under the load of having all these windows open.
Yes...my PC at work is more powerful than the one I have at home....

End of story for me....I would never go back to XP on my Personal machine.

W7 for me, although I do multi-boot with Vista. I used to have XP, and actually quite liked it, but it has had its day. One of the best things about W7 is its hardware support - this is the first OS that I have had that hasn't needed any 3rd party device drivers either during or after installation. That doesn't mean to say that I don't keep my audio and graphics drivers up to date - of course I do - but it gives satisfactory performance out of the box.

Easy question to answer, here's why:

- Windows 7 is the first Windows OS or GUI I have been using with almost no problems. Using RC now, before that beta from February to early June and in my case BSOD seems to be history. First Windows I've never seen BSOD.

- Nostalgia is OK, but sometimes too much. Why use something old when the future is already here? Plasma over CRT, color-TV over black and white etc.

- I still need XP for certain work software and applications, BUT MY WINDOWS 7 HAS VIRTUAL XP!

- 64 bit hardware and software are already here, every day more and more. You can't seriously compare XP x64 to Windows 7 x64.

yes, try it!

i recommend doing a dual-boot installation to see if it all works fine for you, your hardware and your software. here's a good tutorial if you need help.

you don't have a lot of ram though - but it will be enough, some people are only using 512 MB. maybe readyboost will help you a lot - it depends how you use your pc.

but YES - do try it!

That's cool! I guess it's a 32-bi, or can you run x64 on that? Would be interesting to know who has the oldest, minimum rig to run Seven!

BTW, OT I know but squonksc, did you notice your post I quote here was your 400th post? Made a snip:

Thank you, I didn't realize that.

FYI: Pentium M is 32bit only.

Finding a driver to run native resolution on my lappy was a real b*tch.

None of the vista or recent xp drivers worked.

Ended up with the 81.89 which was made for longhorn build.
After fiddling with the nv4disp.inf a bit, it installed perfectly.

Had zero problems with this setup.

? ?

what may seem real in terms of big improvements with 7 are mostly the result of very clever marketing which planted the idea by first 'leaking' a completely stripped barebones 7 core.

It was noticeable faster obviously. Once that idea was stuck and all over the net you're preprogrammed to look favorably on 7 whatever it does.

Now the 7 is dressed up it performs on par with Vista.

Hence, reality is in the eye of the beholder.

Sorry Petrossa, but I have to disagree with you.

Subjectivity is not my thing, and Win7 (on all my machines):

1. is starting up in 12 to 20 seconds, where XP took 1.5 to 2 minutes

2. Recovering from standby is almost instant, where XP took about 15 seconds.

3. File transfers have gone up by 10 to 30 % (depending on the machine)

4. CPU usage on my recording machine has dropped by 50% compared to running the same project under XP.
(for the first time I don't have to freeze tracks anymore to avoid having crackles in the sound)
Laptop idle Cpu is now 3%, where under XP was 21%.

5. Transfer rates over my gigabit network have gone up by 15% compared to XP
(on vista it was horribly slow)

6. Vsti's (virtual instruments) crashing is thing of the past now. (past being XP)

7. and this is very important to me. The UI is so efficient and easily tweakable I spend at least 50% less time on clicks and double clicks to get where I want. Especially the libraries are a godsend.

I have to make note that on all my machines I completely disabled indexing and search (as I always did in XP too)

Disabling those services boosted Win7 beyond XP.

So Win7 is here to stay for me, XP is history.

Maybe you're XP hasn't been tweaked too well,it's hard to believe it's starting up only in 12-20 seconds!

I think that too,for me Windows Seven it's like an update for Vista,a little bit faster(a tweaked vista)!
It's all about marketing!
