what may seem real in terms of big improvements with 7 are mostly the result of very clever marketing which planted the idea by first 'leaking' a completely stripped barebones 7 core.

It was noticeable faster obviously. Once that idea was stuck and all over the net you're preprogrammed to look favorably on 7 whatever it does.

Now the 7 is dressed up it performs on par with Vista.

Hence, reality is in the eye of the beholder.
So 7 is completey on par with Vista SP2? Thanks for pointing that out . You just made 7 seem that much better!

Sorry Petrossa, but I have to disagree with you.

Subjectivity is not my thing, and Win7 (on all my machines):

I have to make note that on all my machines I completely disabled indexing and search (as I always did in XP too)

Disabling those services boosted Win7 beyond XP.

So Win7 is here to stay for me, XP is history.

Bizarre, i can't match those number son my hardware. All i've seen is a steady drop in hardware utilization efficiency.

I now need (see system specs) to do what i could on a 8086 with Concurrent Dos installed, only prettier.

after dual booting xp and win 7 for a month or so, and realizing _everything_ i use on xp works perfectly on win7(even if in compatiblity mode or with a program update) i made a backup of the xp disk and deleted it!

Love windows 7, even if it does eat abit more resources and tend to make the pc run abit hotter, the eyecandy, compatibility, security, built in features all make it worth it!

there are even afew programs that i use that run MUCH better on 7 than they did on xp, which was the main reason for me making the switch.
The only thing i dislike is not being able to use the onboard videocard and the pci card i have at the same time and keep aero on, which can probably be fixed with enough tweaking, but seeing as i barely use a 2nd moniter anymore let alone a 3rd(which is what the onboard was for xp), theres no need

Well as ia said beauty/reality is in the eye of the beholder. It's extermely well known psychological mechanism. Overstimulate the senses and the person will not notice the underlying problems or reason them away.

This post s so true that it hurts...most people are so thick they don't relaize that if you work on something for almost 9 years I would expect resonable progress out of it. Honestly I think those XP comparisions to 7 should be made with Windows XP Pre-SP1 to Windows 7 Pre-SP1. That is a no contest if there ever was...Hell XP Pre-SP1 vs. Vista Pre-SP1 was also a no contest. Vista starting out was bad but XP was so terrible...If in 5~6 years we compare XP SP3 to 7 SP3 you will see that it has never been a contest...7 will always win

Oh, I concur wholeheartedly. There are far too many XP Lovers out there that didn't get to experience it in it's early days before SP1, and therefore do not know just how unstable it can be. I like to compare operating systems on their performance and stability on initial release. And following that protocol, Vista is better than XP, and Seven is better than Vista. People shouldn't compare 7 (not yet even on retail yet) to XP (which has been around for 9 years).

It comes down to what you get Out Of Box on initial release. And for that Seven will always be the winner (until Eight comes out in 2-3 years)

poll asked which would you choose? I understood that to mean which of the 2 has the most overall merits.

Obviously i'm running 7 but for minor details only. My biggest gripe has always been that i listen to music, want to switch to headphones or back and i'd have to restart the app.

Call it what you want for me it's a big enough issue.

Still i always buy a car which predates computer control, with a carb as i fully experienced the cardinal rule: the more there is to go wrong, the more will go wrong.
excatly what app are you using? I have used many media player type apps and none of them requires this...please check your config

benchmarks tests if your computer runs a benchmark well, thats all. It has no meaning in real life.
Just as true as comparing an OS after 8~9 years of refinement to one that hasn't been released...

no i just assumed you'd know what i meant :D Antman has a device installed in my house he always sees what i do.

And the issue hasn' t popped up because in 7 it is finally possible. Which is the overwhelming reason why i use 7.

@Petrossa,

Could you explain what you meant with this?

I wrote administrative and technical multi-user apps for Concurrent Dos.

You could run 4 tasks concurrently on a serial terminal, and you could hook up 16 terminals. at 38400 baud it ran quit well. I replaced many a AS400 with it.

Sure, it was commandline only. But you could access the vestiges of internet (compuserve and such), you could do wordprocessing etc.

The biggest installation with CDOS i ever build was for a company that converted medieval records to microfiche. It was a sole 80386 compaq with 32 terminals, which ran realtime the scanning camera and kept the database for the microfiches. These were stick to a punchcard and that also was run by the system.

The admin could take over any screen, it kept the financial records and personel records.

I prefer Win7, It looks fantastic which XP doesn't. I know about the themes you can download for XP to look like seven, just one problem with those...it doesn't look like seven! They can't replicate the Aero Peek and Jump List to the even near seven standard. I like the performance of seven, I would give that 8/10. I like the networking improvements like homegroup over the million complicated dialog boxes of XP. I hate the shutdown time of XP, that is a deal breaker on its own. What I don't like about seven? That it uses a flawed kernal which is 7 years old even though it's "optimised".

Why flawed? Because the battery life compared to having Mac OS X is terrible. The stupid registry is kept in seven which I wasn't happy about...

I also hate the stupid boring icons that Microsoft didn't bother to replace, or the sound scheme eg. start-up and shut-down which gives me reminds me of Vista!

Conclusion:

I would give Win7 8/10 for PC's, but only 7/10 for laptops. I think if Microsoft did release it in Jan 2010, they may have changed the sound scheme and folder icons...let's hope the service packs do. :D

Started with 286 myself, but I was curious what you meant with "same thing, just prettier" ?

that i could do the same thing in CDOS better and more efficient then in Windows 7 the only the W7 GUI is prettier (and a resource hog.)
