Trying to figure out how to hack W7 to put all the good XP tools back in ..
that M$ doesn't seem to think we need.
Two hacked - several more to go.

1. Do you have a list of XP 'tools' that you consider good (and necessary) ?

2. Which two have you 'hacked' ?

3. If MS deems them 'not needed', chances are, most people really don't need them.
Some people will want them back.

Just interested to see, no work being done here....

My handful of favorite 'utilities' work well with Windows 7, so I can still do whatever I'd like to do...
My handful of scripts and executables that I wrote work OK,
but I (personally) don't see anything in XP that I 'need' in Win 7, other than the above...
(Maybe I haven't run into it , yet.)

The "Run as Admin" gets to be a pain ITA, but I'll get used to it.

I disagree though, I believe it is true if your hardware is relatively modern. Old machines from 2002-2003? Sure, XP's great for those, but computers built in the last 2 years? Just for the hell of it, I've had XP on my home machine, and it felt so....eXPired.

I hate a ringing telephone. I own the technology because it has a dialpad, not because it has a bell.

I have an old Sony VAIO Piii 866 - it runs a highly trimmed XP install (Z would be proud). It does not BSOD. It serves as my bell filter using a very simple piece of freeware - PhoneTray. If I want your call, I get a custom wav announcement over the sound card. If I do not want your call, the CID is bounced off a black/white list. Black goes to a variety of intercepts, white goes to voice mail. I have a simple TSR that dials out to voice mail via hotkey and I can listen to the voicemails. I do not even turn on the monitor for weeks at a time. Power outages are my biggest problem.

I have a Core 2 Duo install of XP also. It runs MS Access 2000 and a proprietary billing application developed by someone else. This platform is used exclusively for the support of that app and the company that relies on it. This install of XP has every application and service configured exactly like the workstations in the UK that use the billing app. I upgraded the platform from a Socket 478 because some RAM faulted and I had a C2D/mobo handy.

I have yet to work with a platform that did not present challenges or limitations - some profoundly so. But you use the tools you have.

XP may not have a place on the enthusiast or gamer desktop. It has a solid standing on the business desktop.

Nice... Thanks for the link, now my computer can do something "useful" for a change...
It doesn't seem to fit in either category:
neither 'old machines from 2002-2003'
nor 'computers built in the last 2 years',
so I guess its OK for me to run either XP or Win7, as I choose.

I wish -I- could have thought of something like PhoneTray while I was programming the HP-3000 (RTE-A)/HayesSmartmodem
to 'reach out and touch' the US Naval Observatory, to transfer GPS readings I just acquired on the KMR (TCMS)...
(Cud've made a buck or two, maybe.)

Depends on your system

If your system is x64 compatible then run Win7 x64. If it is not then it is old enough to leave it as is and spend your money building a NEW system that is x64 compatible.

If you want it to just work and you don't like to tweak or tune your system you might want to just leave it as is and get Win7 when you buy a new PC.

XP is a very good OS and by now it should be well secured and working with all your software. On the other hand Win7 is a VERY VERY good OS and the x64 version is rock solid on my PC. Office 2007 works perfectly and haven't found any software that I need that doesn't work with Win7.

That being said...it really is a matter of taste.

Wow, this thread seems to have blown up a bit since I last visited. I voted for 7, and didn't really give a reason, aside from the GUI not looking like a kids toy. Let me get a little more into detail...

Windows XP is a good operating system, there's no doubt about that. However, I know companies that still run Win2K because it was, without a doubt (IMO), the best, most stable, OS that Microsoft has put out.

That being said, Win2K is no longer supported by Microsoft. Windows XP will soon meet the same fate. Holding on to an OS because it is stable and does what you want isn't a bad thing. Holding on to it past it's "end of support" date is.

When Windows XP is no longer supported by MS that means that you will no longer get vital security updates. That also means that any security holes found past that point are pretty much fair game.

I can understand holding on to an OS that runs well on your hardware and is stable. I can't understand not being willing to move on to an OS that is modern and will continue to be supported for years.

I chose 7 because it is fast on my hardware, stable and does what I want it to do (and because I really am shallow and put a lot of stock in the GUI ). For all those that are choosing XP, just realize that you will have to move on someday, or take risks with an unsupported OS.

Yes they did, as an effort to get companies to move to 7. They knew that companies wouldn't do that unless 7 got glowing reviews and a service pack, which I'm sure it will have by then. Honestly though, if you are using Windows XP in 2014, you're a lost cause. That would be like using, well, Windows ME now...pointless.

In my opinion, XP is not even in the same league as Win7. I have used XP Pro for many years and it became second nature for me to hunt for drivers, missing dlls' and to curse at the occasional blue screen. As for the GUI, well, you can't make a purse out of a sow's ear. Anyway, as I was growing a bit weary of the XP operating system, I turned to Linux, which was stable, had a nice GUI and did what I wanted it to. Hearing of the problems with Vista, I skipped it entirely.

Fast forward to Win7. Since I have been using Win7 I have not even touched my Fedora 11. Se7en has a great looking GUI which is intuitive and has a clean, non cluttered look. I have IE8 in 32 & 64bit, Opera, Firefox and Chrome for browsers. I have been trying every way that I know to crash Win7 and the browsers, without success. I have kicked this OS around the block, beaten on it, installed and uninstalled any number of 32 and 64 bit apps and I can't crash it. Everything just works and keeps working. If I did half of what I put Se7en through to XP, it would be whimpering in a corner.

Yes indeed, in my experience, Win7 is the finest OS I have ever used and XP is best viewed in the rear view mirror.

7 has brought back to me that same thrill and excitement that XP did when it first was released.

Just one of the many things in 7 that I like is that it is just smarter in every way than XP. My wife is running XP on her machine. Every time I have to work with her machine to fix something, I am reminded of how much improved 7 already is over XP.

Interesting:
W2K does what they want,
they're probably making money running their business, if they're still in business,
and they don't seem to be bothered by the 'threat' that its no longer "supported".

That strikes me as a perfect example of "what an OS is for", and what its all about, Windows-wise...

What justifications do -they- give for still running the ole workhorse?
Custom apps? Unnecessary upgrade expense?
Current hardware still acceptable? No web-site to fear virus?
Ingrained knowledge about the dinosaur?

Maybe they share Antman's unspoken philosophy:
"If it works, don't fix it!"
