Several annoying problems have surfaced recently

Hi,

I'm grouping these items together rather than starting separate threads although they may not be related.

The first problem is that I have started noticing an issue with display updating. When a window is drawn or redrawn the scroll bars may not get drawn properly, with the background showing through. When the cursor is moved over them they are then redrawn correctly. I've had a similar issue with the menu bar of some applications where icons go missing until the cursor is wiped over them.

The second problem that has surfaced within the last week or so is that when I shut down there is a very brief flash of a message, too brief to read so I had to capture it with my video camera. It turns out that Windows is waiting for a background program to close but no information is given what this might be. It obviously closes just after the message is posted but this delay has only recently appeared. Without knowing what program is responsible I obviously can't know if it's an old one that's taking longer than usual or a new one.

If anyone can offer any thoughts on these issues I'd be most grateful.

On the "Waiting for program to close" unless you shut down with stuff hanging open it is likely one of the programs that sit in the System Tray. I run a lot of AutoIt3 and AHK programs that I wrote myself and frequently get this message. It goes away before I can click the button for force the close. Likely the only way to find the culprit is process of elimination. Kill one tray program and shut down until the message is missing. Of course this is only likely to work if the message appears consistently on shutdown.

On the drawing of scrollbars, are you running a custom theme? Did you install the replacement uxtheme.dll? I'm just taking a shot in the dark why it would fail to draw without the mouse over.

If neither of those apply I would try malware scans then the trusty rusty "sfc /scannow" command.

Thanks, I'll try quitting the systray components, if they'll let me, one each time before a shutdown.

I'm using a custom theme with some of the aero features and my own desktop background pic. I haven't fiddled with it recently so something external must have affected it.

I already ran a full scan with MSE that detected two pieces of malware. These have now been removed but it's possible the trojan has downloaded something. I also already ran sfc /scannow which didn't find any integrity violations and then used Windows Update to get the latest updates and Malicious Software Removal tool.
