I have an HP m8120n that recently roasted it's HD. I replaced it with a 1TB Seagate Barracuda, and decided to upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit. When I install, the system reboots when it's supposed to, then stays at a solid black screen. I have left it for several hours (overnight) and I can here the optical drive running and the hard drive light goes on, but no display.

I have searched around and found that 7 likes to play tricks with the default display not being what you expect, yet the only output option is a DVI output. Could there be a different issue here, and what could I try to make this function? I am looking to set this computer up as a media control PC.

Thank you in advance for any advice you have on this issue.

Try creating a smaller OS partition for install using installer's Custom>Drive Options.

Next try marking it Active: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/71432-partition-mark-active.html

If this doesn't help, we need to know at what exact point the screen blanks. There is a known issue with driver-loading phase blanking the screen when it loads a projector, tv card driver to which the card is not outputted.

Can you boot into Safe Mode or is the install not completed? If so disable the display adapter until it starts then update it's driver: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/15856-device-manager-access-during-windows-7-installation.html

When it begins the install, it creates a smaller partition on it's own, around 300g I think. Does the partition need to be smaller than that? Also, I just noticed I have a cable output jack on my video card, would that be a better option than DVI to attempt?

What is the video card currently outputted to? Check in BIOS

This sounds like a known-issue where installer loads a projector or tv card driver causing the monitor to blank out at that moment..

Do you have a video card or onboard chip? Can you default to chip in BIOS to exclude card during install?

I have never heard of installer auto-creating any sized partition except for the full HD when not created. Try deleting all partitions using Drive Options, then create a new one of 100gb. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html

Oh, and BTW this is a Clean Install. I noticed that could effect the response when I was reading other posts.

Shouldn't it be loading a TV/Projector driver? I am using a an LCD TV as the monitor. I don't think there is an onboard video chip, at least I see no output for it. I will try creating a 100g partition to install to. Any further suggestions are very welcome, and I thank you for your speedy reply with this.

I'll try to update the driver via safe mode. I can't use a VGA monitor, I have no output for VGA. It will be a few hours before I can try anything, (the TV is currently in use). ;)

I'm having some trouble finding the correct drivers. Do you have any recommendations as far as where to start looking?
