Thank you both. I think I am correct in observing that for both of your suggested solutions I would require the Windows 7 installation disc.
I do not have any such disc, typically
With more time on my hands I could work through the article '
How to Create a Windows 7 System Repair Disc'.
I was not able to use a Macrium Free image restore, as the bootable usb that I created and have successfully used once in the past to restore, did not want to work this time.
In the end I did a factory reset, which took my W7 Vaio laptop back around 3-4 years. It took around 12 hours to get back up-to-date with system updates. Happily it did this in just three lots of mass system update downloads and multiple reboots. [edit: oh yes, and to get rid of tons of Bloatware]
Now my PC is behaving much nicer, the little quirks I'd gotten used to have all disappeared.
So, the problems are:
- no 'installation disc' to hand
- bootable usb wouldn't work
- not enough tech experience
In the end, I'm happy to have my system running again. As a self-taught home user, I was out of my depth in how best or easiest to repair my corrupted system. At the end of the day, however, a clean reinstall has proven to be the (albeit long-winded) answer.
I made notes of and did screenshots of the Start Menu, software configuration that I had set up how I liked it and didn't want to forget, and made sure I had copies of serial numbers of paid software. This time I'm happy to say the whole procedure went smoothly, I'm sure techies would cringe at my efforts, but as a non-techy, it got the job done.
Thanks again for your ideas, Chig.
