Hi there. Any help seriously appreciated! >>

Running 7hp x64 on a gaming laptop (asus g50v).

sfc has thrown up two errors that it cannot repair, and I have been trying for ages now to replace the corrupt system files with fresh downloaded ones, without success.

Firstly, am i right to be concerned about replacing these files? i don't know their true purpose - i haven't encountered problems in day to day use of the computer but am unsatisfied to see an error message... Can i leave the corrupt files alone or does the old adage 'a stitch in time saves nine' apply here?

The files are tapiperf.dll and autochk.exe.

I haven't even got around to trying autochk yet, as all my efforts have been concentrated on the first file:

I have successfully taken ownership of tapiperf.dll via an elevated prompt following instructions at this link: Take Ownership of file - Vista Forums, but when i try to do the next step of this tutorial, giving myself permission to alter the file, and enter 'icacls......... (etc)' it gives me an error message that 'no mapping beween account names and security IDs was done' and fails.

i have found the replacement file from another site, which is standing by on my desktop... but i just can't get the corrupted file to be renamed and put the new one in it's place (Side note: i want to rename, not delete, the original file as a precaution - i presume i can rename it back again if the new one stuffs up..)

What am I doing wrong here please? I can post the CBS log if there is a facility to do this on the site? Also, is there a real danger that replacing these files will require a system restore? Or is that chance minimal....

Cheers you lovely lovely people

A really simple question. What isnt working that makes you want to replace these?

thanks for your replies :D

rich, i would do a repair install but i upgraded from vista, and don't have a dvd for this. i suppose i could burn the iso to a disk... but will this have the repair install capability like a clean install win7 installation dvd would? either way, that upgrade file is on a portable hard drive far, far away..... no immediate use to me now.

zigzag, there is no critical reason. i just want to PREVENT later errors IF indeed these two corrupt files are deemed important enough to fix.. and that is part of what i'm asking in this forum - should i try and repair, or ignore?

carl, thanks for the info. i'm not advanced enough to know what level of importance these files hold, however.. I would be guessing if I tried to interpret your input. autochk sounds pretty important to my untrained ears, from what you just said!

Alex, you can try to update it through Microsoft. You will probably have to do some searching of the various MS sites. You might try posting at this site to find the answer: Microsoft Answers Forums

I would not be overly concerned since you are not having any problems. Let us know if you find out how to fix that file.

ok mixed results, i.e. i don't know if this is a good or a bad thing.. it certainly isn't as satisfactory as an 'all problems fixed' message..

repair install declares there are NO system file errors found, yet sfc /scannow still says the same two files are corrupt.

which scan log should i trust? here are some excerpts from the CBS log, after doing the sfc scan:

the disk that i downloaded following your advice Bill allowed me to do a 'system repair' at boot (giving me the results i already mentioned, 'no system errors found'). But it seems the original suggestion of doing a 'repair install' is a different kettle of fish.. reading the article about how to do a repair install here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html?ltr=R
The interface for a repair install happens from within windows, not at boot.. and has different options from those i was given.

:/

Hey Alex,

No, you cant run a repair install from a recovery disk like Neosmart's, for that you need an Install dvd. Do you have one?

OK, can we just recap what exactly the current problem is?

Hi bill, thanks for clarifying. I don't have a full installation dvd - i uprgaded to 7 from vista and to do this i downloaded the upgrade, rather than getting the dvd.

The problem is simply that i'm receiving this error message when i scan in sfc, and in the CBS log it says it cannot repair files autochk.exe and tapiperf.dll (see some of the log in my recent post)

You should still be able to do a repair install with that Upgrade media. Pretend for 30 minutes that your Windows 7 install is actually Vista, and do an Upgrade to Windows 7. That is a repair install- upgrading your current OS to itself.

1) Unless there is some actual problem that you are experiencing, it is futile to look into the event viewer IMHO.

2) Having said 1) above, I reread the log. The last line says "tapiperf.dll; the source file in store is also corrupted". That means that eventually you may need to access a win7 install dvd to get a good copy of the file.

3) Regarding the autochk error, go through this thread and the links it has.

Corrupted system files cannot be repaired. SFC /scannow cannot repair

Did you burn that downloaded upgrade to dvd? I think this would be that student deal, you can easily make an iso.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/30470-make-bootable-iso-student-d-l.html

Then, you can try extracting good copies of the files from there.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/42776-extract-files-windows-7-installation-dvd.html

Edit: The digitalriver isos can be downloaded.

thanks bill i'll check it out. i've already downloaded that hotfix from microsoft though (the one linked from within your link) and sfc still doesn't like autochk.

i think it'll all have to wait til i get back to the media, and turn it into a dvd

thanks so much for all efforts (i'm giving up on this one til i can use the dvd..)
