Just got a second 128GB 840 pro and put them in RAID 0 for my system disk. Restored from backup. Here is performance (obviously not RAPID).

Also, some people suggest that using RAID slows your boot time due to initialization of the array. This did not change when I put these in RAID0. I also have two 1TB blue drives in rad0. My reboot time (full reboot cycle measured by reastart_time.vbs) is still 16 seconds.

here is old and new for my rig.

massive bench improvement from 830 to 850 pro, real world improvement is not so big, I mainly brought the 850 pro as I wanted a bigger ssd and to give my 2nd rig (testing win10) a ssd.

I don't think this drive is performing as well as I thought it would - Samsung 850 Pro or at least not what it claimed in the ad and now on the box.
It is quick to boot but again I am using my new Asus G750JM which is a bit of a screamer but this was not what I expected.

John, there is nothing wrong with those numbers. The Sequential could be a little higher, but not much. You are still at the limit of Sata III. The 'Practical" limit is around 450-525 for Sata III. It can't go any higher than that. That's why you are seeing some Sata express starting to come out that run off of PCIe lanes which are faster. They have reached the limit of sata III. Plus the fact that you will probably never actually use the Sequential number. Most OS drives use the 4KB read speed and access times about 95% of the time. Those are the only numbers that really matter, and they are pretty good.

Ok Steve I know you have told me that before but it has a hard job sinking in. I was comparing the figures to GeneO's and thought heck what am I doing wrong, plus this is the new laptop I said I was getting. It runs lie a cat with it's tail on fire but the 840 EVO I had in it prior to this 850 which promised all sorts of lightning speeds etc

Oh by the way the new lappy is just the bees knees except for some slight keyboard changes I am having to get used to.

There is suppose to be a slight speed increase with the 850 Pro, but probably not a nickels worth to be honest. The 850 Pro, however, will last you until you get tired of it........it has a ridiculous life cycle because of the type of Nand they use in it. Also, the other Samsung drive, the 840 Evo......are you running the Microsoft SATA controller on it as well? You can tell when you open it in AS SSD as it says "msahci" in the top left-hand corner of the program.

I don't know mate as I think I am going to have to put back the original drive (a 5400rpm spinner) with 8.1 on it because the 7 drivers for that machine require the BIOS to be updated - and guess what that has to be done through a USB stick and yes you have it right the USB ports do not work except for the mouse and charging because the drivers cannot be updated - so even if I were to try that BIOS update I can't.

So after a very frustrating day having to reinstall this main machine the weekend is not going that good and the least of my concerns are the SSD's of which I have a drawer full now.

Sorry about the rant but I think Asus have got this one very wrong.

I wouldn't buy that drive because you think it's going last longer , pretty much any top notch drive you buy today will typically last far longer than you are likely to want to keep it .

The ten year warranty is just a sales gimmick , how many PC enthusiast do you think will stay with the same drive that long even if they could ?

I don't even know anyone who would stick with the same computer that long lol.

Drives outlast computers. I have SSDs I've had in 3 or 4 computers and they still run just fine. I have 2 ND Generation SSDs that I still use and they work pretty well. So, sure a 10 year warranty does mean something to many people, like me. Plus, I think it is refreshing to see a company actually stand behind it's products.

Yeah , i know your the one who disagree's about the 10 year warranty thing after reading your comments about it in past pages .

I personally feel you are in an extremely low minority on this though. Most are not going to be using the same SSD 10 years into the future with the way tech advances , lets be honest. You probably will, i get you there.

Any SSD that has a 3 to 5 year warranty to me proves the company stands behind their product , that is the typical time range when people tend to upgrade since tech has greatly improved in that time span.

I respect your opinion though and have appreciated your help in the past.

Well for me the selling point was the speed as the tech changes so fast I don't go looking for longevity so much as price / speed / reliability.

You are running the MS AHCI drivers for the SSD. Try the Intel RST drivers, they perform better, in particular for the 4k writes.

For my posted scores, I also have write buffer flushing disabled and am using write behind mode. Otherwise my 4k writes would be around 120 MB/s.

I didn't mean the warranty as much as the abuse you can put it through and not have much, if any, performance degradation. This drive is capable of handling terabytes upon terabytes of data written to it without missing a beat.....that means something to me. Also, you are thinking of a drive in one computer for several years........many of us build other machines and carry over drives because they are still great drives. I would have no issues re-purposing an SSD into say an HTPC, small NAS, etc after I've removed it from the original PC. I see several reasons to buy a drive like this, one of the most important is lifespan.

I have to agree there.. Even in the case of upgrading a machine to get new shiny parts or better performance or thanks to CUD, most people will still find a good use for the part being replaced. For example, if at some point I end up replacing my SSD, I'll probably put this one in my mom's laptop.

While a 10 year warranty is most definitely a good selling point, I think it's far more than just a sales gimmick.

Swapped out my 80GB Intel X25M for the new Samsung 840 Evo 120GB today. Ran a before and after. Note it's still SATA2, so not taking full advantage of the Samsung.





So, I have the Samsung software CD. Anything on there I need/should install? Anything I need to do? A Guy

Bill, Congratulations, I think you will find the Evo quite an improvement. Very nice. The only thing I would suggest is running the Performance restoration firmware in case it does not have it and downloading the latest version of Samsung Magician Both can be found at Samsung SSD Downloads | Samsung SSD
